Guest guest
Day 2 Well, it appears my milk just our right soured. I didn't have enough grains in it. I couldn't separate the grains from the curds and there wasn't any whey. So, I just put a lot more grains into a fresh glass with fresh milk. I tasted the water kefir that I strained prematurely yesterday (I can't remember why). It was still sweet, which I guess I should've known it would be, but it was exciting to find out it tastes like kombucha. Very cool, kombucha w/o all the work! I looked at the 2nd water kefir I got going last night and it was bubbling away. I was very excited about that. Either when I moved it or when I took off the coffee filter the bubbling stopped. I took a taste and yep, kombucha like again! Still too sweet, so will taste it later today. It was after all, just 10-11 hrs. I am very excited about the water kefir! I believe my milk kefir will be fine this time, but still have no idea how it will taste. I'm so curious. Thanks for everybody's help. jan
Guest guest
It's me, again. Day 3 of my kefir attempts, which is 36 hrs. for my milk and water kefir. (I think, both.) My milk is sour tasting, but not thicker than the milk was originally. My house is cool, so I am guessing my kefirs will need more time. Should I let it go or put it in a clean glass with new milk, but a lesser amt. of milk? My water kefir is still sweet. Can my house be too cool? During the day we set the thermostat at 72* and at night 67*. jan
Guest guest
That sounds like a WARM house to me. We do 68 during the day and sometimes I think we need to lower it. AT night it's 60. Guest guest
I got my Kefir from my neighbor who makes her's in the refrigerator. I have been doing that and its working fine. Nice and creamy with good grains. Lee Anne, Pennsylvania > > That sounds like a WARM house to me. We do 68 during the day and sometimes I think we need to lower it. Guest guest
Jan, (1) Milk kefir. Change the milk every 24 hours no matter what quality the kefir is. In several days the grains will probably be healthier and able to make nice kefir. My house was cooler than that all winter and made no difference. (2) Water kefir. Mine did improve when I started storing it in a warm place, upper 70s. If their chlorine-free sugar water has minerals, the WK grains will probably get stronger and start doing better. That's why it needs a half-eggshell or mineral drops. Good luck, >
Guest guest
What kind of mineral drops? Can I use my calcium supplements (or any other supplements, I take so many)? I am using Brita filtered water. I read that you shouldn't, but I saw a video with a woman using a Brita pitcher and she was having success. Is it alright to use it and just add mineral drops? Or should I not use the filter and just let my water set over night or boil it? TIA, jan > > Jan, > > > ...If their chlorine-free sugar water has minerals, the WK grains will probably get stronger and start doing better. Guest guest
Mineral drops: I've only heard that people use them. I use eggshell and can't tell you more about the drops. Brita: Do they remove chlorine? Chlorine kills bacteria, even the good bacteria that co-exists with the yeast that kefir grains are made of. Maybe the woman on the video ran out of luck eventually. I don't know how long the chlorine would take to kill the grains. I've heard people leave chlorinated water out overnight or boil it to remove chlorine; but someone else will have to tell whether it works. - > > > > Jan, > > > > > > ...If their chlorine-free sugar water has minerals, the WK grains will probably get stronger and start doing better.
