dying kefir?

My culture has been disappearing - what was probably 1/2 cup or more in August

is now about 1 tsp. It has continued producing kefir, but I can hardly retrieve

the little shrunken yellow bits anymore. I'm guessing I'm killing it - and I'm

so sorry - it's been so good to me for 16 months!

Possible factors:

- we moved 7 miles 2 months ago - that seems to be when the change started

- I handwash and rotate two quart jars - at the old house I sometimes washed in

the dishwasher, almost always stored the empty in the cupboard - now have been

storing on the counter uncovered. Now we don't have a dishwasher, so everything

is hand washed - is it possible the scrubbie isn't sanitary enough? Should I

have one just for kefir jars - I use a handknit yarn/nylon combo to clean the

jar and the rubber spatula.

- I've been growing the kefir - yikes - under the microwave - an '80

s one that we don't use much but it does get occasional use

- August was 90 degrees and sunny, now it's 50-60 and mostly sunny, but nights

are close to freezing. I expected slow down on growth, but not shriveling up to

nothing. Last year in the same house I didn't have this problem with the weather

change.

- we went on a 4 day trip w/o kefir over Labor Day, and a 9 day trip w/ kefir in

Sep (from MI to VA) - it continued to produce

Still the same

- raw milk, straight from the fridge (that discussion is happening on another

thread)

Any thoughts? Thanks!

If I need to buy new - who's got some?

Vonnie

the grains have been getting smaller and smaller, less and less - now there are

almost none - what was 1/2 cup and growning like crazy in hot August weather We

moved two months ago (about 7 miles from our old house).
