I'm still not sure if I want it in my shampoos & soaps, but I KNOW I don't want it in my toothpaste! Carol
Guest guest
>Is the scare tactic information all hype? > How safe, or harmful is it, really? http://www.snopes.com/toxins/shampoo.htm The above URL is what the Urban Legends Reference Pages have to say about it. Some people will tell you that SLS has been used in laboratories to create irritation on skin. Yes, that's true. The problem with using this as an argument against SLS is this: the concentrations used and the length of time used in laboratories GREATLY exceeds the concentration amount of time a normal person would experience with this product. Unless you walk around every single day with shampoo covering your body, SLS shouldn't pose a problem. There is something on the Internet (anywhere, actually) that says something against ANYTHING out there. It's commonplace to see different groups of people interpreting the same research and the same facts in completely different ways. Conclusions are drawn when and where they shouldn't be. It's a huge problem, I think, and most of what you hear " out there " should be taken with a grain of salt. After all, ANYTHING is potentially harmful. Try drinking 10 gallons of water within an hour and telling me that water's harmless. Breathe and let your heart beat for a certain number of years and you'll most certainly die during one of them. This computer monitor is probably transferring dangerous radioactive particles to my brain through my eyes, changing my entire body chemistry and gradually transforming me into some sort of android, so I better go now. I was just wondering where you buy things like sodium lauryl sulfate and clay powder if there is no soap making store in your area?? Are these items in the grocery store also? <<< Hi and welcome. Some ingredients used in making bath & body stuff can be found locally in grocery and/or health food stores. Most of us use suppliers we find on the internet (and there are quite a few). If you need websites, let me know and I'll post a list. I agree with Lucinda that you should start with easy to make, no chemicals needed things like bath salts, balms, etc. The only chemical you should need to use at this point is sodium hydroxide (lye) for making cold or hot processed soap. I started making my own bath & body stuff to get away from the chemicals used by the large manufacturers. I can't see using chemicals to make my own. I recently posted a message about where to buy ready-made, all natural bases of shampoo and such. You can add your own scent, color or herbal extract to these bases. Let me know if you missed the message and need the info. NightShade
