Guest guest
My Doctor told me the best thing for the knees is losing weight. He said for every pound you lose it takes 4lbs of stress of your knee and 7lbs off your ankle. But he said the main thing is not to gain any weight because when your knee bothers you you don't do as much so you can easily gain weight and just to be careful not to gain any weight. Guest guest
I haven't quite figured that out yet! I'm mainly focusing on not gaining any while I'm sitting around waiting on my surgery.
Guest guest
, Thanks for replying. But how does one manage to lose weight without much exercise? Just by diet? Guest guest
hello again, without much cardio, diet would be the primary method by which you could lose weight. are you able to do any type of cardio? are you able to swim? that is a very low impact form of cardio, but will burn quite a bit of fat...especially if you throw in some faster intervals. how about some type of rowing? when my knees/lower body act up I head for the ocean in my kayak, or to swim. are you able to strength train? adding some muscle will cause your body to burn more calories while at rest. even if you were not able to do anything with your legs, upper body weight lifting will help you burn calories and lose fat....both while working out, and throughout the day when you're done. with a little imagination, I think almost anyone can get a good workout. hth Chuck Re: Does weight have any effect? > , > > Thanks for replying. Guest guest
Which means not sitting around for 6 hrs watching TV in the evening feeling sorry for yourself and munching on things like cheese & crackers. I know from experience. Am now 20 lb overweight (note: I'm DOWN from 30 lb overweight -- Ya-hooooooooo!). Hmmmm. I just realized I've lost 10 lb but my knees are no better. Guest guest
Move to a really hot climate where all you can eat without throwing up is salad. But on a serious note, don't suddenly decrease your calories -- your body will just adjust. Be prepared to lose weight very slowly. Ann Re: Does weight have any effect? > , > > Thanks for replying. Guest guest
If you don't have shoulder problems, you can get pretty seriously aerobic with weight lifting and/or flinging your arms around (think about those wheelchair athletes & how buff they are). The problem is that what you REALLY want to do is move your whole body with your legs, and you resent the fact that now you can't, so you may be depressed. Of course, as we all know, that doesn't help, anything you can do to keep a positive outlook is very important. Not that I've achieved this. Guest guest
The following comments take into account several years of time. I used to suffer knee pain all the time (Chondromalicia). My specialist told me to continue biking as the build up of muscles around my knees was probably keeping me in a walking state. (I used to bike around 60 miles a week.) I then lost aprox 50 pounds and the constant pain went away. (I reduced to being in the low average lb weight for my height.) 50lbs was about 20% of my body weight, and I was overweight. With the weight loss occasional pain DIDN'T go away, but the constant pain seemed to go away. After that period of weight loss I went on an out of town trip and noticed that after several days I was back to feeling that constant inner knee pain. I thought I was back to where I had started and that I must have ate or been in a climate that aggravated my condition. Then I realized that I had been spending most of the previous 2 weeks walking through airports, hotels, buildings, etc carrying my luggage and laptop. That would have added about 25+ pounds to my standard weight and put me back to feeling the way I used to feel. So from my perspective losing weight reduced my knees pain. (Unfortunately I've gained lots of weight back this year after having been at my target weight for over 3 years. :-( ) Re: Does weight have any effect? Guest guest
No one really knows if weight has anything to do with it, here is what I know... They think that these following things may be a factor with CP: 1) Weight 2) being athletic 3) environment, ie. damp, wet weather 4) the way you walk 5) genetics I hope this helps you ! glittergold88 wrote: > Was just wondering if losing weight will relieve the knee of some > stress and if it won't hurt as much....anyone has a clue? > > >
