Can't speak from my own experience, but knew a woman who had it done about 10

years ago. Worked for her (she was a mountain climber). When I suggested this

to my doc he winced.

Smoothing Cartilege

Anyone have their cartilege " smoothed out " via arthroscopy? Is this

more successful than lateral release (which my doc does not believe

in)? Thanks.

Any idea why your doc would be against this? A renowned surgeon I

met with believes it in completely...

Well, he didn't say. At the time, I was of the opinion that scraping away

damaged articular cartilage would leave the underlying tissue even more

vulnerable to wear (this is assuming that the real problem -- maybe a

subluxating patella -- would still be there). But if this isn't true, I'd very

much like to know, because I'll do whatever it takes, as long as it's likely to

work.

I had a lateral release in 1995 and that worked till 1999. I DIDN'T have CP at

the time. What I had was a crazed articular lining of the kneecap (like raku

pottery -- saw it on the videotape he made). The OS said since it was crazed,

it couldn't handle all the pressure of, say, hiking downhill, and sent out

subtle pain signals and the IT band joined the club and contracted and pulled

the kneecap over. Who knows? But the LR did work. For 4 years anyway. If a

LR would work again, I'd do it in a minute. But when I saw him last time (with

the MRI's in hand), he said well, he could do a LR, but he didn't sound nearly

as convinced then that it would work as he was in 1995. I'm seeing a different

doc as soon as I can get an appt.

I've started doing some VMO strengthening exercises on the hypothesis that my

patella is subluxating. Of course this could take months. Still -- cheaper and

less traumatic than surgery, and probably can't hurt.
