Hi all,

I keep thinking that I am having pain at weird times. Does anyone

have pain using their muscles to lift their leg. If I lay on my back and lift

my

leg using only my thigh muscles I have terrible pain. I also have terrible

pain when contracting my muscle. If I want to stretch my leg there is terrible

pain when I contract my thigh muscle. My patella is also very sore and

sensitive. My doctor said I have bone bruises. Ever heard of these, is there

help

for the pain associated with bone bruises?

The pain seems to be deep in the groove and I also have slight pain in the

muscle itself. Anytime I contract the muscle I can feel the pain very deep in

the back of my knee it is sometimes achy or bruise like and other times it is

very sharp.

As for the bone bruise, I don't know how I got them but at the moment I have

3 but only one of them is severe. The doc told me that time would heal it and

to be patient and avoid doing anything that would cause it to worsen.

Would anyone be willing to look at some of my x-rays and see if they look

like their own. I have my own website and my own knee blog and if you look to

the side you will see the link for the x-rays. I would love to hear if anyone's

looks like mine.

Where is your pain? I get pain in one of the ligaments (or maybe tendons)

between my thigh and my medial distal pelvis when I do leg lifts with my right

leg, which is the one with the bad (or rather worse) knee.

Bone bruises -- According to what I've read (which isn't much), you would have

had to have an impact to the bone (either sudden and fairly severe, like your

kneecaps hitting the dashboard in a car accident) or over time (e.g. catching a

ball without using a mitt) to have bone bruises. Did you have either of these

kinds of situations? From what I've read, the cure for bone bruises is time and

not doing whatever caused it in the first place.

My OS told me that back-of-the-knee pain can be patellar tendinitis. (But

then again, he's the one who gave me 5 different and wrong diagnoses for my knee

pain.)

Jodi,

Yes our problems do sound very similiar. Those x-rays are from last

year and my knees tilt a lot further now. They ride at the top of the bone

almost dislocating. I haven't had a chance to get to my new ones and get them

up.

For treatments: physical therapy, orthotic shoe inserts, medication, 4

braces, accupressure, cortisone shots and a few other things.

Last night I put my medical records online so anyone can read them and see

what they say. They don't get interesting until I saw a sportsmedicine doctor

on January 2, 2003. Read that one and see if your docs are saying the same

thing.

Jodi,

I forgot to mention what has helped me. The cortisone shots helped

tremendously with the pain and the J Brace helped for awhile until my condition

got worse. The physical therapy didn't help but I have very strong VMO

muscles. LOL.

No surgeries as to date, but I have an appointment with Dr. P Vail,

the director of adult reconstructive surgery at Duke who is supposed to be the

top dog in this state, so I will see what he says. I am willing to try

anything right now to help with the pain. It now hurts to walk and I can't

drive so

that makes life more complicated.

hey, , I looked at your x-rays and they look a LOT like mine!

Several docs have described it as a " mild " tilt and " mild "

sublexation when I bend my knee, but trust me, the symptoms aren't

mild. I think we have a similar history, too (?) I'm 25 years old

and was very active until this hit me a few months ago. What are you

currently doing for the pain? I'm almost done with a round of

hyalgan injections in the 2nd knee, which has helped a bit. I'm also

doing acupuncture, PT (on my own; I hate physical therapists!),

etc... I'd love to hear about what has/hasn't helped you-

I was told that more likely than tendonitis, it was just the

inflammation putting pressure on the tendons, causing pain in the

back of the knee...

Jodi,

I can't honestly say what made them worse, but everyday they get

worse. Week after week I feel more pain and get even more frustrated. The only

advice I can give you is to keep your VMO as strong as you can get it. Remember

to stretch out that muscle and keep moving. A lot of my problem was when

they told me not to exercise I didn't and then I started gaining weight. Extra

weight doesn't help the problem.

Sorry I wish I could be of more help but I have only been dealing with this a

year or so. You might get better advice from the people who has dealt with

this for years.

What do you think made them get worse? The Jan. 2 reports sounds

like it's after your condition progressed further than the x-rays

show. Since my x-rays look like your old ones & i'm already in a lot

of pain, i'd love to avoid making them worse!

Thanks,

Jodi

I had pretty severe pain in what I guess would be my VMO every time I contracted

my muscle or lifted my leg. Physical therapist couldn't tell me what is was.

It would get really bad and achy, though, even when I wasn't exercising. For

some reason, after about a year of dealing with it and keeping up the weight

lifting and walking, it has suddenly disappeared.
