In my 53 years of living I have found that:

1. There is usually more then "ONE WAY" to do anything and what works for me may not work for another.

2. There is always an exception to every rule no matter what.

And last but not least:

3. It is in accepting each other as we are that makes our lives richer and fuller in the end!

Hey Kathann,I got an idea. Let's you and I exchange some and see what happens. We'll divide them in half and do two jars, one your way, one my way. That might settle this interesting idea you have.Marilyn

I have been working on a letter for three days now trying to clear up my misunderstood idea about exchanging kefir grains. What I have in mind has nothing to do with a challenge or proving there is only one way to do things. It is the exact opposite. I'm trying to make it letter perfect so I am not misunderstood again and no one will take anything personally. Of course there is more than one way to do anything. That's what makes the world go around.

Marilyn, who made a mistake by using the " settle " word. That can be taken two ways but not likely. Using this word did make it sound like there was only one way. Bad choice of a word.

In my younger

days when life seemed out of control, I tried to control everything around me,

there was only ONE WAY to do things – usually the long arduous and much

time consuming route. I drove myself into chronic debilitating migraines

before I learned to ‘loosen up’ and go with the flow, that there

are many ways to do things and still have outstanding results.

So.. I do know

about control freaking and what they feed on.

Hi Mike,Getting back to the question about if kefir grains can tolerate or even prefer colder temperatures...that's what I'm hoping to find out. But there is no way I can know by my own experience unless I get some kefir grains already known for that. This is why.

When people run into problems with their kefir grains they call me for help. Many times I find out that they had put them into the refrigerator. My counsel to literally hundreds of these people has been to get them out of that cold environment and keep them on the kitchen counter. After a week or two with a change of milk every day it has not failed to straighten out the " behavior " of these kefir grains. Since this advice has worked every single time I am going to continue to tell people what has always worked. BTW, these people have not always gotten their kefir grains from me. I answer questions no matter where they got their original kefir grains. Along comes someone who is having success with 24 hours on the counter/24 hours in the refrigerator. She is not only successful, the kefir grains are larger and grow just as fast. This is a new idea for me and since I never did it exactly that way before, and since I am always open to new ideas, I gave it a try. My kefir grains did not like it. Now it could be I terminated the experiment prematurely. Maybe they needed to be " trained " longer. Who knows? Then Kathann suggested that maybe it makes a difference where the kefir grains came from. That is a valid assumption. I wanted to test it. I wasn't doubting Kathann at all, but that's the way she took it. On 10/18/06, Mike Tina <mbs@...> wrote:

There is only one right way of doing things. Really? Am I wasting my time wanting to do all these experiments?

The rest of the ways you are talking about are screw-up done by people like you.How do you know that? Don't answer that. It was rhetorical.

I know I have seen the know it alls that do it their way and screw it up for everyone else. This partially applies. I don't consider Kathann a know it all in a derogatory sense of the expression, but she is one of our experts here. What I am concerned about is all the new people coming on board looking for the best advice of how to make their kefir grains happy. Refrigeration has always increased the yeast population and otherwise put my kefir grains and hundreds of other people's kefir grains out of balance. That's why they call me. Their kefir tastes funny. I wonder how many times my advice didn't work and they just didn't speak up. That's a possibility. Maybe there is a percentage of kefir grains out there that prefer colder temperatures every other day. This is a whole new thought to me and I wanted to test it. Maybe Kathann has a unique set of circumstances that is not easily duplicated. That is a possibility. In that case, her method wouldn't work for the majority. I'm always thinking of the newbies starting out. I want their kefir experience to be a pleasant one from the get go.

Looks like you have been doing for quite a long time. I pity the people that have to work around you. That wasn't nice to say, Mike. Don't make me put my moderator hat on.However, I would like your input on my proposed experiment. Don't you think it would be good for others, if they are interested in such a thing, to procure some kefir grains that prosper with a different set of conditions and see if they can duplicate the same results? If these kind of kefir grains are more common than I think, then I'm the one giving bad advice to the people who own these unusual kefir grains, if indeed, it is about origins. No one knows these answers until it is tested.

Oh, my. I am way behind. I can't keep up with all this. I am going to go feed my chickens now and let you guys hash it out. Amen Warren!

As for shouting, large fonts do not always imply shouting. Some

folks have visual handicaps and need large font to read.

Which has me wondering why this group allows HTML and attachments?

This group allows HTML and attachments because Marilyn doesn't know very much about running a group and relies on my moderators to fix it up just so. BTW, What is wrong with HTML? Surely that has nothing to do with worms and viruses. Or am I further showing my ignorance?

Oh WOW Marilyn! What a blessing to have babies and so tiny; are they one of the smaller breeds? I wont have babies until the later part of January and I have not tried chickens yet because the neighbor did and the coyotes thought they were a nice snack. Now there is another run on sentence.

Hi Marilyn,

Yes, it does sadly. HTML allows malicious hidden 'scripts' so unless

you know ALL your members have virus protection it's not a good

thing. I've run several large [1000+ members] , onegroup etc

groups for a decade now and am a web designer as well.

These days you cannot even allow messages with any graphics from

unknown sources as 'web beacons'... somewhat like a cookie are

hidden in them and send information from your computer back to

whoever sent it to you. This is the reason one shouldn't even OPEN

any spam.

This misunderstanding has led to some hard feelings, this is not what

we're about. I got an idea_ " This thread is dead " . If Kathann is happy

doing things her way, fine. If Marilyn does it different, fine. I know

Marilyn, she was probably trying to help, not cause ill feelings. But

as this thread went on everything seemed to blow way out of proportion

with a few misperceive words.

Please lets get back to kefir.

Anyone got a good recipe for a Kefir/Amino Acid Smoothie?

But this misses the point. I don't care if I am " wrong " or if I have to

adjust my thinking about what makes kefir grains happy if circumstances are

different from mine. I am concerned about giving the best advice to all the

people new to kefir. Just because I've never had success doing it " Kathann's

way " doesn't mean her way is wrong for everybody. It may very well work for

some people. And that is valid enough to make some experiments. However,

with her method, in my experience working with hundreds of people, most (and

I've thought all until now) kefir grains will definitely go semi dormant.

And whenever that starts to happen and a person starts to complain about her

kefir grains because she doesn't recognize the cause, and she doesn't know

what to do or if anything can be done... That's when I jump in with Kefir

Grain Care 101. But what if in some circumstances the kefir grains need the

opposite treatment of what I am telling people? That's what I'm hoping to

find out or if Kathann's have simply been trained to behave that way. It is

not my intention to invalidate her method, if it will work for others. If it

only works for her and is not duplicable in other kitchens (using her kefir

grains, if indeed, hers are different from the rest of ours) I will continue

to give the same counsel as I have been giving without having to make

mention of exceptions to the " rule " . If I can duplicate what she does, and

the more people who do this experiment the better, then there is an

exception that needs to be pointed out to people new to kefir.

Marilyn,

who hopes I didn't cause any confusion
