What should water keifer taste like?

I am just trying water keifer, making my own, and when I use just an

fresh apple slice, baking soda and 1/3 c. sugar, to 1 cup grains, my

water keifer comes out cloudy, and has a funky taste to it, almost

reminicent of spoiled milk. Something that makes me feel queasy when I

drink it.

Help!

in IL.

Try using lemon rather than apple. The apple will

break down faster while rendering little flavor

compared to the lemon. I've had success with just one

slice of organic lemon. When the taste got beyond

what I could drink I would cut back on the grains.

We all have our different tollerances. My recipe that

I would use before I went to culturing juice is this:

3-4 TBS grains

1/4 c organic sugar dissolved in

4 c water

1 slice w/rind on of organic lemon

pinch of baking soda

and on occasion pieces of boiled egg shell for calcium

(my water is very hard; so, I really don't need to add

it often).

I would let mine culture for about 1 day sitting

inside my microwave because my house is cold year

round (that's how I like it). I have a sense of smell

that no human should ever be blessed with and

culturing for more than a day brought about a smell

that gagged me. Whith my recipe it taste like lemon

water with a slightly odd after taste.

Good luck,
