(Slightly OT) Names for the Giant Kefir Grain

Hi Kefir Friends:

In response to the pics of my giant kefir-grain, (colony, villa, burg,

mannaColony, group?? etc.) pictures which I have now taken on 3 different dates &

posted at this url, I have received a few " suggestions " as to what to name or

call " it " or " they " or " them " . The grains, the way I understand the DOM and

Marilyn and others, and the way they appear to me, is that they are

" self-enclosed " (DOM), but together groups known collectively as grains .. then

it becomes apparent that each of these " grains " (note plural) ultimately do a

split .. not a 1 celled-division but a multi-celled division of breakoff or

split from each other. If you look at the first pic I took at Jan.22nd, there

were two separate large " colonies of grains " . The one on the right clearly shows

the narrow bridge between the 2 larger groups. By the next milk-change " it " ,

" they " ? had separated so I took the one pictured on the left and am growing it

gently, not stirring or disturbing it much to see how big it can become before

it splits, etc. without any " trauma " , (like hanging over the edge of my wooden

spoon with a section over the edge pulling it apart).

Anyway, besides the original ideas for names for it/they? here's a few I've

received:

From Kefir_Making group; Wayne T: " How about the MOAG (Mother of All Grains)? "

Sherry, (akoutpost) (that's for " Alaska Outpost " for any " outsiders " from Alaska

to understand the lingo .. I asked her about it as I understood immediately from

having been a tribal attorney in Alaska for a number of years. She remarked I

was the first to " catch " the reference.) says,

" ...is there another way to view Planet Kefir? "

Hmm ... Planet Kefir?

Karl Knowles suggests, " How about Keferzilla! "

All good suggestions. Someone again brought up Guiness Book. I actually

checked it out but it appears to me that there are no categories of " things "

they will now accept applications for and the standard application process they

say takes about 6 weeks. One can get expedited review for a heck of a price. AND

.... as all you fellow kefir-growers know .. by THAT time, the likelihood of

" IT " , the MOAGKeferzilla of Planet Kefir, all being in one giant mass is highly

unlikely so they could verify it!

And I may soon lose my source of organic raw Jersey milk at least through their

dry season till April, and hoping they get another organic dairy truck pickup

for this area by then. SIGH! I am sure that wonderful milk has contributed to

the hardiness of MOAGKefirzilla of Planet Kefir!! We'll just have to wait &

see!

However ... remember the " 2 pieces " from picture 1, (Jan 22)? Well, my regular

kefir brewing gallon jar, is now apparently growing them each to pretty good

size. Perhaps they'll get hardy enough to also grow through the dry spell from

Jersey milk!

Best to all ... Joyce & Dave Simmerman

There is ALWAYS a " BETTER WAY " ! Together WE can find IT and make IT a " Cradle

for Humanity " !
