Kefir grains and vacation

I have been making wonderful kefir for 1 year now. We plan to

be on vacation for about 14 days. Should I freeze the grains, store

them in the fridge or what. We did go away for 2 days I put them in the

fridge in a qt. of raw milk but it took about 4 days for them to get

back to normal, so I do have some concerns. I would be grateful for any

suggestions.

Thanks Don

Hi Don,

Four days is about right. No need to be concerned.

You already tried the two weeks in the refrigerator and you only had a four

day recovery. I said that was normal. You'll have at least a four day

recovery period by freezing. At least you'd be able to come home to some

kefir if you didn't freeze them. I don't know if a gallon of milk is

necessary, unless you have a cup of kefir grains, of course. If you are

unsure. Freeze half and refrigerate the other half with some milk. See what

you like better for next vacation.
