Guest guest
I was going to start asking similar questions regarding teeth... Jillian will be 1 next week and has no teeth yet. I was about to ask at what age I should visit the dentist. My non ds son, age 6 now, had his first visit at age 22 months.. he fell off a chair and hit a wood floor.. mouth wide open and cracked his front tooth.. it was pulled because it was cracked through to the root and the pediatric dentist said it was best to pull it. I think I will call him now and see if he sees children with special needs and if so, when he would like to see Jillian. Thanks for all the information. Mom to Jillian, 1 yr. old on the 11th!! This kind of situation is a real shame, because medical care exists for low income kids but not dental care, which is every bit as important. I have a friend who is a dental hygenist who has been active in getting legislation in MD to allow dental hygenist to do screenings at the schools for kids who would not otherwise be able to see a dentist. If you tell me where you live I'll find out from her if there is anything available in your area where you can take your daughter. - Becky - Becky
Guest guest
Bj didn't get his first tooth till he was nearly 2, and they came reasonably steady form there. He has all his teeth, altho they did come in a higilty pigilty way. I was told by our dentist not to stress until he was about 6 or 7 and then they would do x-rays etc. Teeth are one thing you cant really change, so try not to stress about it too much....also just because the baby teeth came thru weird, doesn't guarantee his/her adult teeth will be the same. Guest guest
OK, so when should I get her to the dentist for her first visit? I know that there is NO way she would hold still for an X-ray right now, but it would be good to know what to expect. , Mom to Myah, 2 Re: TEETH > In a message dated 1/4/03 6:01:33 PM Pacific Standard Time, lisa@... > writes: > > > Bj didn't get his first tooth till he was nearly 2, and they came > > reasonably steady form there. Guest guest
Jordan's 7 and I can't get her to the dentist. Not because I don't have the time, but because while there are plenty of dentist that take Medical Assistance, NONE of them around here are taking New Assignment on it. So I can't get her in unless I pay for it and being a single mom, barely making it as it is, that's pretty much out of the question. Guest guest
I was going to take BJ to a normal dentist, had even spoken to a few around town. I then called our Down Syndrome Society, and they told me of a school dentist that caters to special needs kids. It was a free service, as it is a govt run service, and the lady there was soooooo patient with BJ. It is the best dentist visit yet. We were there for under 1/2 hr, and she said he had no cavities etc- and she got a real good look in his mouth. We have a thing called Medicare here in Oz, and money is taken out of your tax each year to pay for it. When you go to the dr and use your medicare card it is called Bulk Billing. BJ also gets a disability pension, and so he can get a few more services free( He even gets $1 bus trips ) as he has a pension card. Our dentists aren't covered by medicare either. The dentist BJ went to was one for special needs kids, on the grounds of one the special needs schools. Maybe you can find a school dentist, or a similar special needs service in your area. I hope so. Heathcare is so different from country to country.........and it seems that dentists are expensive wherever you are Judi Scarpelli wrote: > Jordan's 7 and I can't get her to the dentist. Guest guest
Leis, so far our school district has not told me about any programs. I talked to Jordan's father last night and told him the situation. Unfortunately his dental plan through work is not an actual insurance coverage but a discount plan. You pay for your own dental work but you get it at like a 20% discount. That's out of the question for me. I told him that I would find out how much it's going to cost and let him know what it is. Guest guest
, The only problem with that is that the dental clinic is run out of York Hospital. I refuse to have dealings with them where Jordan is concerned because one time we were at the ER with Jordan and she had a temp of 103. With a heart condition, anyone knows that anything over 102 " could " cause a febrile seizure. They refused to give her a chest x-ray or anything and sent us home, not once, but twice. I finally called her cardiologist in Hershed (an hour away). He told me to get her up there ASAP. I did and they discovered not only a double ear infection, but double pneumonia as well. I wouldn't have Savannah at York either. I drove up to Hershey with my contractions being 3 minutes apart. Judi Judi, Try calling your local health department. Ours does have a dental clinic for children.

" He went against a court order and had her medical insurance cancelled. My lawyer said wait till we get to court. Easy for her to say, Karrie has an appointment with an neurosurgeon on January 23. She has AAI and is being followed to see if she has to have the vertebrae fused. What a guy, huh? And yep, I've been on my own for 2 years now (2 years yesterday) and better off for it! Guest guest
Hi, For those who have reasonably easy access to a Children's hospital, you might check and see if they have a dental clinic for kids with medical complications. I took Ramona to ours here in Seattle for years and was happy with the treatment she received. They were great working with any fears she had, it probably took three or four visits before she was comfortable enough to let them really clean her teeth. Ramona was eligible for this clinic because of her heart condition, not ds. I figure with so many of our kids having heart and other conditions, many would be able to use this service. It wasn't easy to find an adult dentist that we both felt comfortable with, but we finally have and Ramona did super there for her first cleaning. Such a grown up young lady, I was so proud of her! Hope this provides an option for some. Mom to Ramona 19ds << I was going to start asking similar questions regarding teeth... Jillian will be 1 next week and has no teeth yet. Guest guest
Sue, Jordan's biological father has been pretty good for the most part these past two years. I even took him back for an increase and it was really no big deal. Since he's been made aware of it, I don't think there will be a problem. I did not have x rays until she was about 9 or 10. And even then we went in a couple of times before they got a real good picture. So don't worry about getting xrays. what i mostly worry about is more the gum diesease thing. She's have very few cavities. We did use a ped. dentist, but I always felt like he was rushing things and she'd go in and come out with lots of tears in her eyes. And he did do alot of sp needs kids. UGH. so we switched to our family dentist who has some great assistants who evidently made the process of cleaning teeth fun. hehe. we now use a ped. dentist who pulled the chunk of tooth that didn't completely fall out. Guest guest
I just took Mac to the dentist this past week---this is getting as bad as haircuts (which continue to be a NIGHTMARE!!), but the office/staff is very efficient and we are in and out in a matter of minutes. Mac has been going to the dentist every six months since he was just over 2--about 2 years 2 months and the dentist told me I should have brought him in between 12-18 months. He has not yet had an x-rays, though...just QUICK cleanings and a check by the dentist. I made an appt. for Kit to go, too, when we go back in June...she will be 22 months at that time. Guest guest
Oh hey, that makes two of us. It's amazing that there are people who can get away with taking advantage of the system and then there are those, like myself, who get punished when the system fails to admit their own mistakes. I know... that had absolutely nothing to do with the topic, but since I'm annoyed with the system, I thought I'd throw my $0.02 in there. Judi Judi, I do not have dental insurance nor medical assistance; however, I do not have to pay for my son's () cleaning. 's dental treatments are covered by The Grottoes of North America under a program called " Dental Care for Children with Special Needs " . This program does NOT cover patients under Medicaid/Medical Care. I have a pamphlet that I received from this organization that states " An application for this service for Children with Special Needs can be made through any Grotto in the United States and Canada " . Here's their website: http://www.scgrotto.com/Text%20documents/Dental%20Care%20Program.htm I chose a dentist who has worked with special needs children because I felt this was important. was 6.5 when he started going to the dentist.
