I never really knew for a fact it was bird mites, except that many months later, I found something stuck to a black portrait photo - dead - light tan - when I microscoped it - it looked just like the pictures I had seen except that it was all dried up - but a perfect outline with all the features. I was going to save it and send it somewhere, but it fell apart when I scraped it off. And anyway, just because I found something, doesn't mean that's what I had. The biggest pointer was that the landlord found 4 rotten bird nests covered with fleas and rotting wet decay in a very hot -humid summer above the shower where the fan was supposed to be working. They all fell into the tub and he sprayed all over probably scattering

them in every which way. The fleas were eveyrwhere and ate us up for about a month, at one time, I had about 60 large bleeding lesions - some of them all blended in with each other. Then the exterminator brought that to an end, that's when the real problems started and never stopped. So if the fleas were gone, then what was biting us by the hundreds - I guess bird mites carrying all kinds of bacteria. Sometimes at work, it was so bad and I was so weak - my eyelids were all sticky and burning, I could hardly see - couldn't wait to get home, but to get there - I had to drive in even a heavier infestation itching all the way home, then I would jump in the tub for relief. I'm guessing that there were bird mites in those nests with all the horrible bacteria that formed in the rotting mess. I will never forget that horror!

Seriously, the whole mite/bug/collembola infestation was outrageous. It seems impossible that they're gone. I don't EVER want to go through that again. I'm still dealing with chronic Lyme in a very big way, but after going through what I did I know I can handle this. I came upon this group after they were gone, but I will share anything that I can with others that might help them get past it.

One thing I'm not clear about is how people know they're birdmites. The name of the group could be deceiving. I saw collembola, but there could have been any number of mites, parasites, etc. Involved of which I will never know.

I was lucky to find a doctor who knew about this stuff and treated me full force at day 1 when I saw him- Dr. Schaller in Naples, Fl. He's VERY expensive but after a few months with him I found another doctor closer to me who continued treating me effectively.

One thing I never mentioned- the fuzzballs/ lint cocoons some of us get on clothes and fabric- if you tap them they will jump and slide, I think it was the collembola(springtails) inside them. Anyone ever noticed this?

Yes, that definitely brings back memories. A first I thought it was scabies, but it wasn't. I spent hours in the bathtub and often fell asleep in there. Did you have the lintballs all over? And when detached they could move, that was the weirdest. On Sep 26, 2011, at 8:44 PM, Doris Kennedy <kean2465@...> wrote:

Very graphic and good description Doris. I will never forget either, all the biting on the eyeballs, up the nose, up private parts, into the ears, you name it, we had it. Bites that felt like a tiny ice pick to the feet... bites that were lesions that did not heal for a year or longer - it has been a very sci fi experience all the way around. Who could forget it? I still find myself scanning my environment for "specks" of things, bugs, floating debris... and I can't help observing people's skin, always looking for marks or any sort of irregularity. The whole scenario can really make you crazy. I don't like any sort of insects near me either. This is wearing off though with time. On Sep 26, 2011, at 10:58 PM, Goldstein@... wrote:
