Vanderbilt Breaks World Record For Vaccinations In 8-Hours

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Vanderbilt University has broken a world record for the number or flu shots given in an eight-hour period.

It would have taken 8,000 people on campus to break a Guinness World Record, and by 3 p.m. Wednesday, they had 12,467, which doubled the previous record.

Vanderbilt staged Flulapalooza, with some 44 vaccinators and 300 volunteers helping out with the event to try and vaccinate 1,000 people an hour for an eight-hour period.

The record was held by Kaiser Permanente in San Diego with 6,215 vaccinations. The record was set last October.

Organizers said while breaking the world record would be nice, the official goal is to test the Medical Center's emergency preparedness.

" We need to be able to vaccinate our employees and students in the event of a pandemic or an emergency. We have a plan to do that, but we haven't actually performed it, so this is a drill, " says Dr. Swift, the Medical Director of Occupational Health Clinic at Vanderbilt.

The event is open for Vanderbilt students, staff, and employees, being held in a tent located between Light Hall and the Veterans Administration Medical Center building.

Flulapalooza will run until 7 p.m. The emergency preparedness drill lasts the full 12 hours. To be included in the world record attempt, participants must have had their flu shots before 3 p.m.

Ugh. Honestly, you'd have to buy $150-200 worth of food to recoup the cost of the shot. Sure, they're doing it for your health, not their sales.
