Jane, I am very familiar with this thanks to a post on here last year about a documentary called "The Child." I watched it and it was all about how a lot of governments have signed onto this CRC, but as of yet, the US hasn't. However, even though it hasn't been ratified here yet, judges cite it all the time in the decisions they make with regard to children. It is what's used to take children away from parents who refuse treatment for their children, or discipline children in a way that the particular judge disagrees with. The CRC would also say that children's medical records cannot be viewed by the parent unless the child agrees, and that whatever they decide to teach your child in public school, with their contention that it's for your child's own good, is none of your business. It was a very eye opening, and terrifying documentary. I had noticed over the years that the government, through the legal system, were taking more and more liberties with kids and ignoring what parentss rights were, but this really put into words for me. The group who put out the video is trying to get an amendment to the constitution saying that, barring abuse, the parent has the sole authority with regard to decisions effecting their child, medical, educational, etc. It's assumed that this is a right we already have and it was never put in the constitution because it wasn't even questioned at that time. This is a conservative group, which isn't surprising since they generally want less government involvement. I have always been a liberal and still am, but this issue is so scary to me and so important to me. that I have gotten on board. They regularly send me emails talking about the progress they're making with getting this amendment through and when they need help with contacting politicians etc. They generally keep their emails about this issue, but in the past when they've mentioned other conservative issues in their emails, which I do not agree with, I wrote back and told them if they want this passed, they better stick to the subject or they risk alienating liberals who would otherwise be on board. They said they appreciated my feedback, because since they're all conservatives at that office that sends the emails, they don't always realize when they are touching on something that might be offensive to liberals. There are many liberal lawmakers that are signing onto this also. The website is www.parentalrights.org, and you can order the DVD, The Child, and the new one that just came out, there. It comes with other things, so it's not that cheap, but I emailed and asked if I could get just the DVD somewhere, and they directed me to the website of the person who actually did the documentary and it was much cheaper there.

Regardless of what your political affiliation is, I highly recommend this DVD to anyone who cares about maintaining the right to make decisions for you kids. One of the examples in the DVD was a couple that took their baby to the ER because she was having some kind of reaction to a vaccine. Everyone was really nice to them until they mentioned that the child just had a vaccine and they wondered whether it could be from that. Their whole attitude changed and they dismissed that idea and suggested a whole battery of invasive tests for this poor baby. The parents said they weren't comfortable giving all those tests, but they were insistent. They tried to leave and they called security and CPS. Luckily, the parents were able to reach their pediatrician, who vouched for them and they were let go. To me, as a divorced, single parent currently on disability, this is particularly frightening, because I would be an easy target and assumptions would be made about me in my current predicament, that could definnitely lead them to take my son away should I ever have to go to the ER and decide to refuse some sort of treatment.

I hope you'll all make it your business to watch this DVD.

CRC General Comment on the right of the child to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of health

Whilst I could find no mention of vaccinations or immunizations I can not help but wonder if there will be submissions made regarding making them mandatory or otherwise?

CRC General Comment on the right of the child to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of health (art. 24)

Re: Call for submissions on child’s right to health

The Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) contains legally binding obligations in relation to the right of the child to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of health and to facilities for the treatment of illness and rehabilitation of health (art. 24). By virtue of its mandate, the Committee on the Rights of the Child (the CRC Committee) has decided to elaborate a General Comment on the right to health of children under eighteen.

The CRC Committee elaborates its General Comments with a view to clarifying the normative contents of specific rights provided for under the Convention on the Rights of the Child or particular themes of relevance to the Convention, as well as offer guidance about practical measures of implementation. General Comments provide interpretation and analysis of specific articles of the CRC or deal with thematic issues related to the rights of the child. General Comments constitute an authoritative interpretation as to what is expected of States parties as they implement the obligations contained in the CRC.

The General Comment on the right to health will clarify (a) the normative content of the right of the child and adolescent to enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of health, and to facilities for the treatment of illness and rehabilitation in relation to health care services and (B) the legally binding obligations of States parties to the CRC with respect to ensuring the full realization of the child’s right to health. The General Comment will provide a conceptual framework and recommendations for concrete measures and actions required by States Parties, and non-State actors, to fulfil these obligations.

Click here <http://www2.ohchr.org/english/bodies/crc/docs/GCArt24_CRC_Scope_and_Outline.doc> to see the detailed scope and proposed structure of the General Comment.

The CRC Committee welcomes inputs on the child’s right to health, in English, French or Spanish, particularly from interested organizations and individuals who have extensive experience or information on the right to health of children under eighteen. The submissions are invited to address the following questions:

(1) What should be the basic premises for the realization of children’s right to health?

(2) How can the principles of the CRC, in particular articles 2, 3, 6 and 12, be applied to designing, implementing and monitoring interventions to address child and adolescent health challenges and what aspects are specific to a child’s rights approach to health?

(3) What is the normative content of article 24? What are the specific obligations of States under article 24? What are the responsibilities of non-state actors under article 24?

(4) What are the priority concerns in general and in particular regions of the world for the implementation of article 24?

(5) Which concrete measures should be put in place to implement article 24?

The submissions shall not address the content of Article 24.3, which will be covered by a separate joint General Comment/Recommendation currently being produced by the CRC Committee in collaboration with the Committee on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW).

The submissions should be limited to 5 pages and sent to the following email address in Word format by no later than 6 January 2012: crc@.... All submissions should be accompanied by a brief presentation (1 paragraph is sufficient) on the experience of the submitting individual or organization in the subject matter. The submissions received will subsequently be posted on a webpage dedicated to the General Comment. Please note that the United Nations does not offer remuneration of any kind for inputs into General Comments.

This kind of crap really worries me too. I mean, who is going to protect my children if I get shot trying to protect them from ‘big brother’ and their all knowing universe.  I just had my sweet baby smile at me. I would be totally heartbroken if she were forced to have vaxxes and then weren’t so sweet and healthy anymore. We can all imagine just how totally pissed we’d be!
