Hi Everyone

Just wanted to let everyone who has the Vit K cream in on some additional

uses of this amazing stuff.

I was at a conference where it was introduced about 2 (maybe 3) years ago.

It was a big hit. I saw some amazing pictures and have had some for my

personal use since then.

Use it prior to any surgery that will cause bruising. It was greatly diminish

the bruising after surgery.

Use it as soon as you get a bump that you know will cause bruising. It will

prevent or diminish the bruising.

Use on any skin trauma, such as a fist fight (I know, not us, but maybe our

kids) to prevent bruising and increase healing.

In summary, Vit K can be used on the skin to prevent discoloration from blood

underneath the skin caused by anything!

We are due with a baby in 3 weeks. We do not know the sex of the baby. I met with a pediatrician regarding if we have a boy, my husband would still like baby to be circumcised, so I was seeing the Ped to see if they would/could perform it on day 8. She wasn't thrilled about it, but said she would do it. She has now called and left a message and said she is not sure if she will perform anymore.

I am open to the oral Vit K for me prior to birth of baby and giving baby after born. Is there any legitimacy yet of her being concerned?

Please advise :)

Find a mohel if you are going to do the circumcision. The medical way is painful and protracted. If you wait until the eighth day of life, your son should not need vitamin K; if he does, he does not need to be circumcised.I have three sons whom I arranged to be circumcised because my husband is Jewish and that is what he wanted. I had an orthodox Jewish paediatrician do the first two circumcisions; they were awful; if you do not believe me make arrangements to see one before you decide to do this to your own son. I am sure there are some on youtube. I thought an orthodox Jewish paediatrician would do a circumcision in the Jewish mode, but he used the medical model. My third son was done by a

mohel. They do circumcisions everyday of the year. It was quick and painless. My son did not even cry. This is the way it has been done for centuries. The medical model is a poor excuse for surgery. That is the way that surgeons are begun in their training. They practice on newborn males. Find the book, Labor and Delivery, by Constance Bean, an RN and CCE. She describes the rotations of interns practicing on newborns - just barely a day old getting circumcised. She describes it clinically and plainly, but the pain is evident. Your paediatrician may be reluctant to do a circumcision because it has been quite a while since she did one. Ask her.To be clear, there is no reason to do a circumcision unless you are a religious Jew, and if you are, find a reputable

mohel. ~ Maureen R. Gradvohl ~ Recent Activity:

I asked the ped. to send us a copy of the package insert of the Vit K and here is the email I just received. Any thoughts?

,

This is the link to the ‘package insert’ on the brand of vitamin K the nursery gives. There is not a paper version in the package, but this is the brand used. You can read it over and call me if you have any other questions or want to talk further about it. I am in clinic tomorrow. I do recommend the injection over the oral (the risk of hemorrhagic disease of the newborn is 1/10,000 without any vitamin K at all, 1/100,000 with the oral doses, but is completely prevented with the injectable).

You could also increase your consumption of green leafy vegetables or take a spirulina supplement which will in turn give you extra vitamin K & when you breastfeed your baby, he will get the vitamin K naturally in a form that is the most easily digested and assimilated for him. Honestly, the mohel's model, at least the one I saw done on my son, was quick and done in a second; my son never cried and did not notice it. He simply pulled the foreskin down and snipped it. Gone. Done. A good mohel may travel and may allow you to witness one that he does. That may help. The medical model is long, painful, about 20-30 minutes, with retraction done with a gomco bell clamp - and I can only suggest that you see if you can witness one. They are done daily at your local maternity ward, I guarantee it. Again, youtube may have one. You have time to do your research. I wish I had. My sons say they are proud of their circumcisions, but I often wonder. ~ Maureen R. Gradvohl

Thanks so much for the tips. I will make calls tomorrow and see what I can come up with. You would think it would make most common sense for all to be done the mohel's model, esp if it is quicker and less painful.

I am sure there are some on youtube. I thought an orthodox Jewish paediatrician would do a circumcision in the Jewish mode, but he used the medical model.

My third son was done by a mohel.

Ask her.

To be clear, there is no reason to do a circumcision unless you are a religious Jew, and if you are, find a reputable mohel.

It's not just you. It is the thing I most regret (besides vaccinating). But we can't get into that here because discussions can get very heated. I did want to mention, though, that not all doctors do the procedure the same anyway. My older two had different amounts taken off, one had anesthetic, one not. So one more reason not to have a doctor do it.

I know, I know.... Part of me is hoping for a girl so I don't even have to address the issue :) but time will tell. We definately don't do any vaccines, I'd rather not do the Vit K injection, and not sure on the circumcision (we have 2 other boys who've been circ'd and husband would like to continue). I've also worked in skilled nursing with elderly patients and have seen infections from poor hygiene as well as an elderly man getting circ'd b/c of infection, so I have seen problems later on in life on those who aren't circ'd. I'm sure this may open a can of worms on the off-topic of circ or not to, but my intention of the initial post was to find out more on not doing the vit k injection and still being able to do a circumcision.

I have stated I can do a diet to increase my vit k and to pass on to baby, but they for sure won't do it unless I minimum have the oral Vit K

I did find a jewish temple in the area. I will make a call tomorrow to see if they do circ's and what method they use.

Thanks so much for the tips. I will make calls tomorrow and see what I can come up with. You would think it would make most common sense for all to be done the mohel's model, esp if it is quicker and less painful.

Vaccinations From: mrsvoltaire@...Date: Thu, 22 Dec 2011 16:13:50 -0800Subject: Re: Vit K

I did a search and the closest one and they are about 4 hours away. I will keep looking. What's the difference between the medical model and Jewish mode of circumcision?

Find a mohel if you are going to do the circumcision. The medical way is painful and protracted. If you wait until the eighth day of life, your son should not need vitamin K; if he does, he does not need to be circumcised.

Hi ! We went through this with our 8 month old son when he was born in April. We lived in Louisiana at the time & the ped initially said he would do it on Day 8 then backtracked & wanted to wait until he was a month old since we refused the Vit K injection at birth. Our situation was complicated by a positive marker on the PKU test, which was another reason he wanted to wait until we had follow up tests done. Which, in retrospect, I wish I would have listened to my gut b/c I initially refused the PKU testing, but relented when hubby felt it would be a good idea. But, that's another story! I explained to the ped that my midwife put me on alfalfa at the beginning of my pregnancy & she had even increased it to a double dose just before he was born, so there was no doubt that he had plenty of vit K on board. Of course, the ped had never heard of alfalfa or that it is high in vit k. Although he thought it was interesting & that he would "look into it" it still didn't change his mind about doing it any sooner. We also looked into a mohel, but couldn't find one within 4 hrs of us in any direction in LA, so we also looked in Texas. We found one there through a friend, but he wanted $4,000 to do it, which is ridiculous! So, we wound up having it done when he was a month old & the ped used anesthetic. But, to answer your original question, I would start taking alfalfa prior to the baby being born b/c it is very high in vit k & is also a natural stool softener. The latter is the reason I initially went on it to begin with, but I wanted to make sure you knew that so you weren't surprised if you're not having any of those kind of issues! You may or may not want to continue after the birth, just depends on if you are breastfeeding or not. My son was sensitive to it & it made him gassy, so I had to come off of it while I was breastfeeding, but it doesn't affect all babies that way. I was adament about refusing the vit k shot after reading the pkg insert. Here's an excerpt from the "adverse reactions" portion of what your ped sent you: Severe hypersensitivity reactions, including anaphylactoid reactions and deaths have been reported following parenteral administration. The majority of these reported events occurred following intravenous administration (see Box Warning.)The possibility of allergic sensitivity, including an anaphylactoid reaction, should be kept in mind following parenteral administration.Transient "flushing sensations" and "peculiar" sensations of taste have been observed, as well as rare instances of dizziness, rapid and weak pulse, profuse sweating, brief hypotension, dyspnea, and cyanosis.Pain, swelling, and tenderness at the injection site may occur.Infrequently, usually after repeated injection, erythematous, indurated, pruritic plaques have occurred; rarely, these have progressed to scleroderma-like lesions that have persisted for long periods. In other cases, these lesions have resembled erythema perstans.Hyperbilirubinemia has been observed in the newborn following administration of phytonadione. This has occurred rarely and primarily with doses above those recommended. (See PRECAUTIONS, Pediatric Use.) My feeling was, how do you know your kid isn't going to be the one that's hypersensitive to it or have an anaphylactic reaction or possibly die from an injectin that isn't really necessary? And the fact that it also causes jaundice didn't sit well with me either. It's the same situation with the hep B shot. It was designed to cover 7 % of the mom population that were drug abusers & had sexually transmitted diseases to protect their babies, but they typically refused the shot, so they made it mandatory for everyone so that that 7% of babies that needed it, got it, despite what it did to babies that never needed it & suffered reactions to it. It's the same with the vit k, the thrombosis type condition that the injection prevents is for a very small portion of the population of babies being born, but they still make it "routine" for all babies to cover that small percentage despite what it does to the masses who never needed it.

Hi

Just curious is circumcision a big thing in the US? Just in Australia it never gets spoken about and there are nearly no doctors that will perform it any more.

On the Vit K, our son never had it as both my husband and i didnt feel it was required. Maybe it might be worth while looking into family health history to see if there is a history of any blood issues. That may have an impact on what you decide to do.

We had a baby boy that I did not take the vita K for, did not do the shot and got circ’d in the hospital before we left. It’s fine. don’t worry about it. eat lots of broccoli and real butter. Breastfeed immediate and start the gut on producing its own Vita K. Let me repeat: that’s all I did. Eat lots of broccoli, real butter and breastfeed. No shot and no delay. I did’t even talk to our OB about the fact we didn’t do the vita K shot. And congratuatlsions!!!!!!! It’s very exciting. Do you have a carseat? All four of my boys had the K shot--didn't know any better. One of them had terrible jaundice. So, a 25% rate for that in my house!

both of my boys got jaundice, so we're batting 100% here...

I had two VBAC's after two c-sections. You can do it, too! (and the last two babies were 12 and 9 days late).

I'd avoid the docs if there are better options, too. I like the girl idea, too!

that's encouraging :)

The ped just called back and stated that she and none of her colleagues will do the circ in the clinic on day 8. So, our option is a)pray for a girl so it's a moot point, B) oral Vit K but only some of the rounding peds will perform the circ when only the oral is taken, c) have the injectible Vit K

I'm not liking my options too well if the baby is a boy :( I am feeling a lot of pressure and heaviness as to what to do.

There's an easy answer. Maybe the pressure is happening for a reason, listen to your gut and all....
