Last week i heard an amazing interview on NPR with Dr. Bill Frist of Tenn., a

former prominent member of Congress. Discussing the famine in Somali because of

a group he's formed. Over and over he stressed how much the starving, dying

children needed the measles vaccine. He sounded totally concerned and

compassionate--and stated that the cost of antibiotics might be a penny and half

that for life-saving sugar water--but the major thing he insisted at least three

times was the measles shot that cost $1 and, in his interview, he clearly

considered on par with the other two.

He talked about measles going through the camp of hundreds of thousands of

refugees (most mothers who likely buried at least one child on the long walk to

the camp), many who had to live outside the much too full camp, but there was no

mention of how the measles spread was started OR possible consequences of giving

such shots to malnourished and near-dying children.
