They are claiming this after the fact when no one really ever heard of autism back then--it existed but it was nothing that the public knew too much about. And I grew up in the 60's. No one I knew of had autism. It was not prevalent at all. That was also about the time the MMR came out so maybe they were tweaking the facts a little to push the vaccine. And since rubella often occurs without the person knowing they had it (like me!), I don't see how they could know the real stats anyway. But, yes, very interesting. If it's true, all the more reason not to deliberately cause it in children with the vaccine!
