Guest guest
Hi, If anyone here lives in VA and has experience with homeschooling and vaccination requirements and can help me out I would really appreciate it! My daughter just turned 5 so it is our first year filing a " Notice of Intent " to homeschool. I have read the law on Vaccinations and homeschooled children are expected to follow the same requirements for vaccination as children in school. (seems crazy to me, but definitely what the law states!) So, since in VA my choices are medical exemption or religious I think I am going with the religious exemption. I am nervous though. We are Catholic. Plus my daughter did receive a lot of vaccinations, we stopped after my son was born. She is not " up to date " . The form I found online seems so easy - just sign and notarize? And finally, where does this paperwork go? To the superintendent with my other paperwork? Thank you so much!
Guest guest
Where in VA are you? I am filing my first NOI as well. I have no intentions of putting 's vaccination status in w/it. They can ask for it, and then I'll provide the exemption. happy homeschooling! Guest guest
We are in VA (Front Royal) and I was just recently reading the law as well. I had the same thought about the requirement that homeschooled children be vaccinated just as if they were attending school – craziness! You shouldn’t be nervous, though. From what I have heard from others (and I know A LOT of homeschoolers) it is very easy, no matter what way you go. Those who have done the exemption just have filled out that very simple form found on-line, had it notarized, handed it in with their letter of intent and never hear a word about it. Others just don’t mention it at all (they don’t bother with the exemption) and still don’t hear a word about it. Good luck! Guest guest
Religious is definitely the way to go. Medical exemptions are not really much of a choice because you are not likely to get one, even if your child had a previous reaction. Don't worry about being Catholic. You cannot be questioned about your religion (well, you don't have to answer anyway!). And it doesn't matter what you did before, only what you do after the form is submitted. I would hand it in with the NOI. You want to look knowledgeable about your rights. I sign a similar form in CT, or you can write up your own. Yes, you send it to the superintendent: (http://www.nvic.org/Vaccine-Laws/state-vaccine-requirements/virginia.aspx) "No proof of immunization shall be required of any child upon submission of (i) an affidavit to the division superintendent stating that the administration of immunizing agents conflicts with the parent's or guardian's religious tenets or practices" I'm sure it will go fine. Guest guest
I bet the schools don't ask for exemptions because they aren't even aware of what the law is! Winnie Homeschooling and Vaccinations in VA>
Guest guest
Hi, I'm at little late on the subject, but I'll add in anyway. My son was homeschooled last year for Kindergarten. I sent in the NOI, and did not include the vaccine exemption. A few weeks later I got the acknowledgement from the superintendent. No where in the law does it say that it must be sent with the NOI, only that you have it. (in VA Beach)
