Guest guest
Dear Kylie, a third thing I forgot. The ER never did anything about his mouth. I had to ask for cotton to blot the blood. My son bled the entire time he was in the ER - hours. My sister was a ER dentist at CHOPs at the time and she told me that the traditional approach in medical circles is to leave the mouth to the dentist since it is considered "dirty". The mouth is NOT the domain of the medical doctor. I was given a referral to a children's dentist instead in the medical building next door. This was stupid because after four children, I already had my own dentist and did not care to go to anyone else. Therefore you can be happy in two areas - you got some care and the ER staff believed you. Progress is being made.~ Maureen R. Gradvohl ~ From: kylie_wright <lkylie@...>Subject: ER trip, really pushed us to get tetanusVaccinations Date: Monday, June 27, 2011, 4:39 AM I haven't posted in ages on here, but I'm feeling really shaken after yesterday's trip to the ER. My 4 year old son fell off the monkey bars and did a face plant. At first we thought it was just a bad cut inside his mouth, (the amount of blood was crazy!) But then I saw that his upper front tooth was bent back at an unnatural angel. So we had our first trip ever to the ER. When they asked initially if he was up to date with vaxes, I just deflected the question. But eventually we had the "we don't vax" conversation, and the doctor was really putting the pressure on for a tetanus shot. Saying that "tetanus is everywhere, and our mouths are very dirty places". Now, I'd thought that tetanus was mostly found in soil etc. I did bring up that since he hadn't had the initial shot that a booster wouldn't work, and he hadn't seemed to remember that till i mentioned it. He then said "we need to start him on a course". The idea of inflicting an already traumatized system with more toxins seemed ridiculous to me, but my husband is now having doubts that we are doing the right thing. Can I get some affirmation from out there that my son is going to be ok? I am making him swish with hydrogen peroxide mixed with water, and also salt water alternating. They also prescribed penicillin. Kylie
