Guest guest
They told us that if we vaccinated him he could return right away. I think he would have been more likely to have caught the disease from the vaccine than from the possible exposure as the child who had the chicken pox was not in my sons class, grade, neighborhood, or activities. I do not wish for anyone to be sick but wish he would catch the chicken pox as children did when I grew up to obtain natural immunity. The nurse was very stern on the phone so we kept him quarantined for two weeks which was no easy feat for a healthy nine year old who was forced to miss the last two weeks of his little league season and year end events at school. My husband feels like we were made an example of for not going along with the program. Guest guest
I have had chickenpox as a child. I have also had shingles as an adult. Now pregnant, can I get chickenpox? I am always looking for a way to " give it " to my little girl, and wonder if the right opportunity come up, I'd have to pass due to being pregnant. I can't get it anymore if I am pregnant right? It used to be if you had it once you had immunity - but who knows for sure if you had it or something else Also some concern that lifelong immunity requires constant exposure. But if you had shingles it means, according to them, that you have had chickenpox and it later comes out as shingles when not getting continual exposure and/or stress lowering immune system. Guest guest
Hi, I've been lurking so far because I'm not a mom but I'm not a fan of forced medicine. Forgive me if this was answered and I missed it but, wow, things have changed. When I was in grade school, no one ever got chickenpox vaccines. Either you got it or you didn't, and I got it. It was a pain for my mom to keep me from scratching, or touching the sores and then maybe my eyes, but I lived. Every kid who got it was out of school for awhile and lived to tell about it. We lived and we were fine. If anything, parents had some semblance of relief because they all said it was harder on you if you got chicken pox as an adult, and if you got it as a kid, you never would be afflicted by it again. Although it can come back as shingles? And that's worse? Anyway, why on earth did anyone think a shot was needed for this in the first place? What year were these first introduced? Guest guest
The CP vaccine came out in the mid-1990's. My kids got the CP in 1997 and that was when I first heard about the vaccine. Since everyone knows CP is really not a big deal, the vaccine was promoted as making it easier on working parents. People fell for it hook, line and sinker. Guest guest
Just to repeat, vaccines are ONLY for school/daycare entry. They are not required for just being alive. Next time they pull this, I would ask for proof that these children actually had whatever disease, especially with something that could just as easily been from any recent live vaccines. Someone here in this group did that recently regarding a supposed case of mumps, which turned out not to be after all. Yet the school attempted to exclude the unvaxed child anyway. Guest guest
Sorry for the confusion. What I meant is that there is a chance to get my 17mo into a " chicken pox party " . However I am not sure it is a good idea because I am pregnant, and am not sure I would be " safe " . I know for sure that I had chicken pox as a child. But wonder about virus mutation or anything alike. If I am sure I am posing no risk for my baby, I will pursue the getting my little one in contact to chicken pox (although not sure if she isn't too young either...). Guest guest
I am not sure if pregnancy would effect anything. I am not a nurse but from research I understand that once someone has had the chicken pox they should have immunity and not catch chicken pox again. It is possible to have shingles after having had the chicken pox as you experienced.I would like to expose my child to either chicken pox or shingles so he can catch the disease and obtain natural immunity while he is at a young age. This is challenging now as vaccination has made chicken pox cases few and far between in our state. On Jun 21, 2011, at 7:38 AM, Skolny <sandcama@...> wrote: I have had chickenpox as a child. Guest guest
Just to add frustration to all of this... All three of my kids attended a CP party several years ago (at the Dr. office BTW) and it worked great, they all got it pretty well. None of them were vaccinated, can the schools keep them out? It hasn't happened yet but I'm seeing it coming. I think I would turn around and ask them how many teachers would have to leave the school. Most folks my age and older had CP and not the shot. Guest guest
This is a common practice. It is supposed to protect your child from the communicable disease. I do not think the members of the Chicken Pox party will be excluded since they already had chicken pox and therefore have immunities to the disease. ~ Maureen R. Guest guest
Many (all?) states allow for some vaccines to be exempted if you can prove your child had CP, and even mumps, maybe measles. You'd have to check your law and how "proof" is defined. Once upon a time, a parent's word was all that was needed for a doctor to record that your child had CP. Here's MA's: © The requirements in 105 CMR 220.500(A) and ( shall not apply: (1) upon presentation of written documentation that the student meets the standards for medical or religious exemption set forth in M.G.L. c. 76, § 15; (2) upon presentation of appropriate documentation, including a copy of a school immunization record, indicating receipt of the required immunizations: (3) in the case of measles, mumps, rubella and hepatitis B, upon presentation of laboratory evidence of immunity; or (4) in the case of varicella, upon presentation of laboratory evidence of immunity or a statement signed by a physician that the student has a history of chickenpox disease. Guest guest
And isn't it odd they would ask for proof from unvaxed but not from vaxed--who are the ones mostly getting CP? As usual, the assumption is that the vaccine works. They don't really care one whit about immunity, just that your children get the almighty vaccine and that their behinds are covered about following the law. My current ped took my word for it that my older kids had CP, and noted it on the chart even though they weren't her patients at the time. I don't even have their old files, although I did take pictures! I was a tad worried about getting arrested for child porn when getting the pictures developed... Anyway, maybe your doc will be rational, too.
