So far, I have had emails from more than a dozen people across Australia (and even from the US and the UK!). I want to keep the momentum going because the job we are doing is going to need all possible hands on deck so if you have been thinking about contacting me to find out what is involved with helping the AVN, please get in touch by Friday this week. At the present time, I am collecting details on everyone who has contacted me and getting your locations. I will be back in touch with everyone by Friday to discuss options and what you can do to help us - and how we can help you. Because this will be a 2-way street with training and information coming from us and ideas and energy coming from you. I am especially interested in speaking with people studying in healthcare-related subjects who are going to be affected by the compulsory vaccination policy just introduced (see the article below). If you feel that the government has no right to kick you out of your course (or your job) because you believe vaccinations are not in your best health interest, please contact me to see how we can work together to remedy this situation. Contacting me is not the same as making a commitment - so how about dropping me a quick email or giving me a ring to indicate your interest in learning more? If you have between 4 and 8 hours a month you are able to give to the AVN and would like to find out about how you can get involved in helping out with our vital work, please either email Meryl or call on 02 6687 1699 or 0414 872 032. If you email, please put the words 'Help AVN' in the subject line of your email. If you call, I will be available all day Thursday and Friday but not on Wednesday.Yours in health,Meryl Dorey Nurses and Compulsory Vaccination As you may or may not know, the AVN spent over 12 months lobbying NSW State Parliament and helping others in the nursing and medical profession to overcome efforts to make it compulsory - without any right of appeal or exemption - to accept up to 10 vaccines or lose their job or their position at University. The end point - we thought - was a case by a nurse with 17 years' experience who was being told she would lose her job if she did not take the shots - shots she had already had serious reactions to. With the AVN's assistance, this woman took NSW Health to court and won - but it was to be a hollow victory. Please read the following letter I received from one of our members - a current LPN who wanted to be an RN - child of 2 nurses and sibling to another nursing student who also had to leave school because of this policy. This person was top of their year in nursing school when they were told about 3 years ago they would have to be vaccinated or leave. Because of the above-mentioned court case, this person was recently informed that they would now be allowed to continue their training but would have to start from scratch. Not letting that deter them - because of their love of nursing and helping others, they enrolled in school only to have the following happen within weeks: Federal Health made a new amendment to its health policy on 21 of Feb this year which effectively closed the loophole that i found. I'm now back out of university and working at another private nursing home. There is no way that anyone can study and become a registered nurse in NSW, , Queensland, the ACT, Tasmania or Western Australia without being fully compliant with vaccinations now. Notice that i left out northern territory. They are the only place in Australia - at the University of Darwin, that still has a conscientious objection form, but i don't know how long that will be for. My advice to those that want to do the nursing [without being vaccinated] is to do it in the Northern Territory or you can't do it. Perhaps become lawyers instead and get together to sue about this discrimination. There is no other way to do it. Personally I'm fed up with the Australian health system and since i don't have the money to fight them, they have lost me. I'm starting mid year at the University of ******* with a Bachelor of Human Resources. I'll just run and manage the facilities that i can't work in which means that I'll be paid much more than a nurse and work a 9 to 5 job. Australia wants nurses and has a severe shortage. Well, our health system has contributed to the loss of at least another 3 nurses (myself and a fellow nurse that went to university with me as well as my sibling who left the field 2 years ago because of these requirements). On an interesting note the head of the faculty of nursing at the University, Dr ********** who was the one that encouraged me to come back and said that he would help me, was removed from his position and replaced by a woman that merely quoted protocol at me all the time. i don't like protocol being thrown at me. I was looking for help and answers - not what I've already read, so i sort of told her she could go and - well you get the idea. I'm not sure if Dr. ********* was removed because of his stance and trying to help me, but it just seems very strange that he was unavailable when i actually needed him. This is an issue that I'm sure you will agree, needs to be taken care of. If we allow the government to discriminate against healthcare workers, who will stop them when they want to discriminate against us. I will be honest though and tell you that the AVN's resources and my own time are stretched too thin to take on this issue - no matter how important - without help. If you would like to learn about ways in which to help defeat this move on the part of the Federal government, please contact Meryl by email or in the office on 02 6687 1699 or 02 6687 2436. Drug Muggers: Which Medications Are Robbing Your Body of Essential Nutrients--and Natural Ways to Restore Them by Suzy CohenPrescription and over-the-counter drugs help millions of people with devastat-ing diseases and chronic conditions.
