travel assistance

Hi ,

There are several organizations that can help. I don't know where you

live, but our local Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation helps fund

travel or arrange for travel if given 14 days notice. They told me

that several of the airlines have programs where they wil fly the child

and one parent for medical appointments. Additionally, they said that

Angel flights does fly the kids for appointments. But they have to

have notice....for usour appointments are often with very little

notice, so they help with gas vouchers.

I would start meking some calls. Call your local Hospital...find out

who the cancer foundation is for kids (there is usually one in just

about every major city and they help with things other than cancer) and

call them. Tell them your situation and be specific about what you

need. If they are unable to help, ask them if they can point you in

the right direction. Southwest is one of the airlines that fly's

patients. Call Angel flights directly and ask them and if they cannot

help you directly, ask them what organizations you can go through to

access their services.

Good Luck!

> We are heading to the NIH next month and were told that they won't

pick up the cost of our flight or lodging on our first trip there. Is

anyone aware of which organizations might help with travel assistance?

I wasn't sure if Angel Flight would do that since we aren't actually

getting treatment there, just testing.

Here are a few options; please bear in mind that these services may change their

availability, eligibility requirements, and insurance options at any time:

National patient travel center: (can help match patients with appropriate

transportation) http://www.patienttravel.org/AFAS/nptc.htm 800-296-1217

The Corporate Angel Network (specifically for cancer patients)

http://www.corpangelnetwork.org/about/index.html 866-328-1313

Air Compassion (bed to bed ambulance service):

http://www.aircompassionamerica.org/ 866-270-9198

Miracle flights (free flights for children) http://www.miracleflights.com/

800-359-1711

Mercy Medical airlift (free flights for people with financial need).

http://www.mercymedical.org/

**Some airlines will give you a discount...but I don't know which ones at the

moment. For a while, Continental was willing to help. Ask for bulk seating

(not near an emergency exit) so that you will have more space from people.

Thanks for the info regarding travel expenses to the NIH. I'm going to save

this for future reference, however we just learned today that we meet the

financial guidelines through the NIH to have them pay for our flight and

lodging while there. What a relief! I had originally called the social

worker there to see if they could help arrange a free or reduced cost flight

and she told me about their assistance program. Just thought I should post

this in case someone is going out there any time soon.

Thanks again for all of the info! We should post this on the site!

Hi all,   Traveling with my unvax child to LA and then to Cabo in Mexico.  Any tips on things I can do to boost and secure his immune system before/during/after we travel?  thanks so much!Meghan New York From: Katarzyna <dolfan1425@...>Subject: Re: Whooping Cough - my daughter may have it ***UPDATE***Vaccinations Date: Thursday, January 13, 2011, 9:29 AM

Thank you everyone for your concern and input. Ava is doing better, her coughing has become less frequent/violent. I think we have a few weeks of cough ahead of us, but I'm ready for it, especially when the worst is over now.

I must point out that her pediatrician sent us to do her bloodwork, which came back inconclusive, as opposed to her positive PCR swab. He asked me if the health department called me, they haven't (the hospital lab probably didn't report it properly - good for me). I asked him if they would question my vaccine beliefs and he said that they shouldn't, then he actually said "a vaccinated individual can catch WC too." I couldn't believe that he said/admitted that.

Bottom line, my whole experience with WC cough and the medical field is that it's not that big of a deal. My daughter's pediatrician certainly didn't think it was the end of the world (like the media portrays it), he said that she got it and will get over it fine. I am VERY happy with our pediatrician, supports us no matter what we do.

Again, thank you all for your support.

> It was confirmed this morning that "pertussis dna was detected" in her swab. Her doctor's office did not try to give us antibiotics, even if they did, we wouldn't take them, there is no need to weaken her immune system any further. I was told to give her cod liver oil (vit A & D) and Sambucol (elderberry syrup) for immune system boost. I will go ahead and get the sodium ascorbate also.

Probiotics help, if not already taking them. Also, It seemed like everyone wanted to touch my baby in Mexico, especially her face. Well meaning, but I quickly learned how to say 'don't touch my baby' in Spanish.

I am so glad she is doing better:0)

I just wanted to bring up what the doc said about still being able to catch WC

even if vaccinate. Vaccines are known, even by most conventional doctors, that

they aren't 100% effective. That is why they say that they don't feel

comfortable around unvaxed kids. The unvaxed child could pass on the disease to

a vaxed child for this reason. This is what they say.

Right, you must get vaccines because they are so effective......except when they're not.

Hi Winnie,

They are thinking that 90%(or what ever the %is) is pretty decent protection but

not perfect. And since vaccines aren't 100% effective they need to stay away

from the unvaxed.

I realize that, although staying away from the unvaxed doesn't even make sense. They should stay away from sick people, all the time--lock themselves away from society. Being unvaxed doesn't equal carrying all diseases known to man, anyway (I know you know this, I'm just saying).

Funny thing is, there is no set percentage of protection (assuming the presence of antibodies even means that) for any vaccine. It varies in different people, it varies over time, over how many booster shots, the potency of any vaccine--they just pull a number from one place and act as if it means something. In fact, you have no way of knowing whether you even produced one antibody, let alone "enough," unless you get checked daily. It's such a bunch of nonsense.

On top of it, when your child gets vaccinated, you are told they are now protected. The docs never say there you go but just to warn you, this doesn't guarantee anything so live your life accordingly.

trouble is what they think is effective is based

on antibody response and antibodies after vaccines do NOT mean immunity

So there is only 0% effective

anyone figure out where the first case ever came from?
