exactly.. what i love is the people that call me ignorant or fear-mongering because i don't vaccinate and share the information i find.. when no one ever *ASKS* me why i don't vaccinate. and those that find out are always stumped and usually end in an " oh well, yes its a decision every family has to make with their pediatrician " LOL..

the irony is i do religious exemptions because its easier. for the docs they leave you alone with religious exemptions. but the pro-vax families leave you alone when you have medical exemptions. so its a game of who you want to fight with less.

Mindy,

I hear ya. . .this is a very hard argument to counter. But I usually tell people that neither infectious diseases NOR chronic illnesses are acceptable outcomes for our children.

Of course we don't want them coming down with a terrible case of pertussis, but we don't want them to have asthma or autism, either. The problem is that the data is beginning to show that vaccines (as we are currently administering them) contribute to the epidemic of chronic illness--(this is in the medical literature!)-so as parents, we shouldn't have to choose whether we want to roll the dice with infectious diseases or whether we want to roll the dice with chronic illnesses. We need to come up with more progressive and intelligent ways to manage infectious diseases. This is not a black and white issue. It is not a matter of whether we should vaccinate or not. It is a matter of figuring out how to best manage infectious diseases while not putting our children at risk for chronic illnesses like autism or ADHD.

What is a thinking, intelligent, conscientious parent to do?

Great point--don't dismiss the seriousness of those conditions the friend felt were acceptable. Equate them to the diseases she fears (which do NOT kill everyone).

My daughter is allergic to penicillin and sulfa

antibiotics. That could certainly be

life-threatening. How we found out was she had

the hep b vaccine when she was twelve (Or was it

the hib? Whatever they started giving

twelve-year-olds about 13 years ago). She was

having scary symptoms that from my reading

sounded like " GBS. " I was pretty scared. The

doctor made no connection of these symptoms with

the vaccine and prescribed antibiotics for her

symptoms, first penicillin--to which she got an

immediate rash--then sulfa, followed by a new

rash. Finally, when they just left her alone,

she got well, thank goodness. Now, so is she

really allergic to these antibiotics, or was it

all caused by the vaccine reaction? I sure wish

I knew if it would kill her to have penicillin,

but we can't risk it. Once you have a bad

reaction, your next reaction could be fatal, I've read.

Your first reaction can be fatal, too. It could also be she received a vaccine from a hot lot and the next one might not be (although I sure would be worried about a second one!). There are a lot of factors as to why a particular vaccine could cause a reaction--including the manufacturer's quality control record.

And it would be the Hep B vaccine at age 12. Hib is only for babies. It's a good thing you figured out the connection to her reaction. Many parents don't.

Well it was obvious. She was fine before the

vaccine, in bad shape afterwards. The doctor

didn't even mention the connection, and I did not

report it. Thanks for setting me straight. I

thought it was Hep B but wasn't sure. So long ago and they sound similar.

I know, they start to blur for me, too, since it's been so long. Then they have all these new ones since my guys were babies. It's unbelievable. I don't know how we're all alive without having them!

I don't even know what the hib is. I wanted to

ask, but that seems lazy. I could just look it up later.

It's the meningitis vaccine for babies. I believe a different one is given to college students. They began giving it when my oldest was a baby (1991). Now they give boosters, too. You know--it didn't work with one so let's give more??

OH THANK YOU! You know, the more I learn, I look

back and just wonder....my stepbrother had

meningitis as a baby, before Dad married his mom

when he was still a cute little toddler. He had

some very strange emotional problems growing

up. He'd smear feces, that sort of thing, and

could be very hard to get close to. I wonder

now if he was damaged by the meningitis, and

whether the meningitis was a vaccine

reaction. He was really a challenge. He's the

only person I've ever known who had

meningitis. Well I think that depletes my stock

of family vaccine stories, but maybe not. Thanks for listening.
