No cases of anaphylaxis reported for adjuvanted H1N1 vaccine

Anaphylaxis did not occur in 830 patients with confirmed egg allergy receiving an adjuvanted monovalent pandemic H1N1 influenza vaccine, study reports.

Anaphylactic reaction did not occur in 830 patients with confirmed egg allergy who received an adjuvanted monovalent pandemic H1N1 influenza vaccine (Arepanrix—GlaxoKline), according to a study in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology.

The authors noted that a theoretical risk exists for anaphylaxis after influenza immunization; however, based on study data, the vaccine is safe.

Of the patients, 9% required divided-dose administration of the vaccine. None of the 830 patients experienced anaphylaxis, and minor allergic symptoms occurred in 9 patients and were treated with an antihistamine. Brighton Collaboration criteria for the occurrence of an anaphylactic reaction were used. Vaccination of more than 3,600 other children with reported egg allergy resulted in no anaphylaxis, while 2 patients received epinephrine for allergy-compatible symptoms.
