PUBLIC ENEMY #1

Fisher: Pharma Blowhard or Concerned Citizen?

You can't be a parent in this community without bumping into them. Every

article, TV program, blog or radio show brings them out in force. The

mention of " autism " or " Dr. Wakefield " brings them

scurrying out from under their rocks snapping and snarling and spitting

about the wonders of vaccines and their self-anointed roles as concerned

citizens in protecting the pubic health.

It's a scam and we all know it. Most of the bloggers, poseurs, and

self-ordained autism experts have ties either directly or indirectly to

pharma or mainstream medicine (which is really one and the same thing).

Age of Autism has done a remarkable job outing

Orac and shedding light on the soft underbelly of the vaccine

apologists.

Fisher of the UK has been very busy lately. Blogging

here under the title " JABS Loonies - Justice, Awareness, Basic

Support and Mind Blowing Stupidity, " recently left the

Internet safety of anonymity to engage in more concrete acts of

aggression against our community.

's current mission is attempting to frighten, bully or pressure

venues Dr. Wakefield is scheduled to speak at on his current book tour

into canceling the event. Hotels are under siege by email, fax, and phone

demanding they cancel Dr. Wakefield's appearance.

For a week before this past Saturday, attempted to intimidate the

Phoenix Ritz-Carlton site of Dr. Wakefield's latest talk into

capitulation. To their credit the Ritz told her, in essence, to take a

hike.

, who also blogs as Becky Fisseux, will continue to act in a

dangerous and reckless fashion until she is outed and her connections to

pharma publically revealed.

Still the attacks will continue until we take legal and other appropriate

actions necessary to incur real costs on those who spread lies and

misinformation.

Dear Teri,

Change is coming. More engaged and engaging we are revamping and will be

introducing a host of new columnists, blogs, radio shows, and videos to

report, encourage and harness our community's best and brightest.

Be inspired! We are going to be right there with you providing the

education and information, advocacy and activism, resources and respect

to break free of the past to nurture our voice of the future.

If your child or loved one is 3, 13 or 33, being a parent today is

different than what it was only a decade ago. The times move faster.

Reaction is no longer an option. Educated, gutsy, articulat, passionate

parents who have learned the lessons of the past are no longer content to

squander the time and energy waiting for a knight in shining armor.

Courage not appeasement, power not guilt, recovery not risperdal is where

you will find today's parents. The authentic voice of today's parent is

grounded in answers. And now more than ever we have the mind-power to

match our manpower. Let's get to work.

BE AMAZED

Sam Debold with Don Henley

Jam with Sam as our favorite piano virtuoso delights us with his

favorite songs from the Eagles. Sam Debold is 13 years old and

loves to play piano! He was a happy, healthy, normally-developing

baby until 15 months of age when he experienced a significant physical

and social regression following receipt of seven vaccines at his

well-baby visit; eventually, he was diagnosed with autism. One of

his favorite ways of learning is through music therapy. Sam

understands things much more quickly and effortlessly when taught through

music. He has an amazing ability to hear a song a few times and

then sit down and play it on the piano--without sheet music. He's

even delighted crowds on a cruise ship. Sam's branching out to

multiple instruments now, too! Listen to Sam's show

Eye On: Price

(Pictured Will's hotrod)

A dozen years passes in an instant. During the past 12-year instant I

lost my wife, myself, and my friends. The one exception is a very special

one. Motivated by him and his contribution to the autism community I am

introducing a new feature of our newsletter that will profile a largely

unrecognized individual or organization making a difference in the war on

autism. I would like you to meet him.

Ed Arranga

Executive Director, AutismOne

Profile: T. Price

Back in the " old days " Will (less than a year from age 80)

might have been said to have " true grit " or been called a

" regular guy. " Today, they almost seem quaint. They are

throwbacks to an earlier age before " superstar, "

" anti-hero, " and " Teflon " began doting the language

and curved the culture to the gaudy, the compromised, and convenient.

Will's grounding comes from a time when a man's measure was more about

honor and honesty than portfolios and profits. There was an inborn sense

of proportion to the times. On one hand he has the kindly character

of a country gentleman (which by the way he knows and plays up like

Wilbur from

Charlotte's Web). On the other, he willfully rejects his own

present-day limitations or any notion that the future is a sequel to the

past.

Will is an experienced engineer, an ex-college professor of computer

science (25 years), and the author or co-author of 40 books on

computer-related subjects. He's an American success story. Most of us

would be satisfied hitting our stride, take great pride in our

accomplishments, and build on them for the future. Will doesn't build on

the past. For instance, at age 60 he decides to build an airplane. Not

just any plane, but an experimental aircraft that eventually won many

awards for him. It looks like something Batman's friends might tool

around in (see it

HERE). Will is almost 60 when he completes the plane and learns to

fly.

What, you might reasonably ask, goes well with building and flying

experimental aircraft? Build a bigger or faster plane? Join a gang of

fast and furious pilots that barnstorm around the country impressing the

locals? Wrong. When Will reaches 70 he decides to move to Utah and

devote himself to skiing, a passion he's had since he was a kid in his

40s. After several years of expert instruction and hard work he joins

company with many of the expert skiers at Utah's

Snowbird resort. Well known for his blue helmet with red flames Will

is the " old guy " who will ski any run on the mountain with

style.

So what else is there to conquer? Nearly a decade ago Will knew nothing

more than the average " Joe " about autism. When my son was

diagnosed I decided to form an autism organization Will agreed to join

me. His one condition was that he stay in the background as he neither

sought nor needed recognition. He quietly stepped in and without

fanfarehas been instrumental in building AutismOne. If there is a ski

slope or aircraft more treacherous than autism I don't know what it is.

But now I realize that both pursuits require the dedication and

nerves-of-steel approach to never back down. It's about believing in

yourself no matter what others may say you (or your child) can

accomplish. That's Will to a " T " .

Today, Will is AutismOne's CFO, all around trouble-shooter, goodwill

ambassador, and one of the special individuals working behind the scenes

to let others know, " It's not what you've done, but what you are

about to do that matters. "
