A "surprise"? That's a novel way of trying to get out of it...

Vaccine death a surprise for Qld health

DARREN CARTWRIGHT April 25, 2010 - 9:49AM

Queensland Health's chief health officer Dr Jeannette Young said she is unaware of any toddler dying as a direct result of receiving a 2010 seasonal flu vaccination.

A report in The Sunday Mail claims a two-year-old died in April, less than 12 hours after receiving a seasonal flu vaccination.

It also claims national health authorities have ordered GPs to stop giving the vaccine to children aged under five.

However, Dr Young, who has refused interview requests, has responded via a statement and dismisses any knowledge of a death related to flu vaccinations.

"Until now, neither Queensland Health nor the relevant national body had been advised of, or were aware of any death allegedly related to a 2010 seasonal flu vaccination in Queensland," Dr Young said in a statement issued on Sunday.

"Our deepest sympathies go out to this family at this time."

Two-year-old Jade Epapara, of Mt Gravatt, died unexpectedly at home on April 9.

Parents Dave and Epapara said tests were being conducted on their child.

"It's a dreadful, it's a very hard time," Mr Epapara told The Sunday Mail.

"It's very coincidental," Ms Epapara said.

The coroner's office, with the help of police, is preparing a report into the death.

"Queensland Health is working closely with the Coroner on this matter," Dr Young said in a statement.
