Guest guest
we are in huge trouble....................... " What makes this project different from other housing projects for people with disabilities is eight of the 12 residents will be coming straight from the County area instead of from a 5,000-name-long waiting list kept by the state, Kramer said. The wait time for those on the state list is more than 30 years, he said. The existing residence on the site was demolished this month and a prefabricated two-story home will be assembled at 290 Cedar Knolls Road, across from Allegro School, in the coming months. The residents on the waiting list, who have jobs and can live independently, are expected to move in this summer. The home will serve as a model of a new way of addressing a severe housing shortage for adults with developmental disabilities, said Mark Kramer, director of The Rose House, the Plains-based organization that is building the home. The nonprofit helps people with disabilities live independently. " It's a tremendously exciting prospect, " Kramer said. " It's a demonstration project that we hope will be replicated all over the state. " What makes this project different from other housing projects for people with disabilities is eight of the 12 residents will be coming straight from the County area instead of from a 5,000-name-long waiting list kept by the state, Kramer said. The wait time for those on the state list is more than 30 years, he said. The other four residents will be taken from the top of the state list. The house will have eight apartment units and beds for 12 people. It will have a full basement with a recreation room, staff offices, a laundry room and an elevator. The first floor and the basement are fully accessible. There will be staff in the home around the clock, but individuals will need to take care of all their personal needs, which will make running the home much less expensive than other group homes, Kramer said. The Rose House, which Kramer established in 1999, also runs two group homes in the Budd Lake section of Mount Olive and a vocational program in Denville. The project is being co-developed with NewBridge Services Inc. and is budgeted at $2.3 million. It received funding from six sources: the state Housing & Mortgage Finance Agency, the state Division on Developmental Disabilities, County HOME, the Hanover Affordable Housing Trust Fund, the Federal Home Loan Bank of New York and the United Way of County. Tenants pay 25 percent of their income for rent. Markey, 29, who is on the waiting list to live in the home, said she sometimes drives by the site to see its progress. An employee of the Hanover Township building department, she said she's excited at the prospect of living on her own. " I know, at the same time, I'm going to miss my family, " she said. Matt Rodaman of Rockaway Township said he's looking forward to independent living. " You can do stuff on your own, " said Rodaman, 32. He has been a ShopRite employee for 15 years. Weiner, 30, said she's looking forward to having her own home. " I just can't wait to get out of my own house, " she said. " I don't like being home too much. I like to be out and about.
