Politics played no part in scrapping HIV vaccine centre: -

OTTAWA — Canada's chief public health officer says politics played no part

in the decision to scrap plans for a multimillion-dollar HIV research

facility.

Dr. - says no politicians or aides from any party

approached him about the centre.

The $88-million laboratory was to be the signature component of the Canadian

HIV Vaccine Initiative, a joint venture of Canada and the Bill and Melinda

Gates Foundation.

But the Public Health Agency of Canada killed plans to build a new HIV

research facility in February.

- told the House of Commons health committee none of the four

finalists met the criteria.

He added a Gates Foundation study found a lab is no longer needed because

there is already enough manufacturing capacity in North America and Europe

to meet research needs.
