The Shameful History of the Rotavirus Vaccine

Mid - 1970's ~ Animal research begins to develop Rotavirus vaccine;

man makes a live oral vaccine for humans that combines human

rotavirus strains with rotavirus taken from rhesus monkeys.

March 19,1998 ~ Report reveals that natural immunity is more

effective than the vaccine: CDC (Centers for Disease Control) states

that after one natural infection from rotavirus, 75% of children are

protected against subsequent infection, and 88% from severe diarrhea

due to the virus.

Studies in the U.S. and Finland showed that the vaccine was no more

than 68% effective against rotavirus infection, and protected only

69% against severe diarrhea due to the virus.

Reports also show that vaccinated children in the Finish study had

MORE THAN five times the rate of high-grade fever and twice the rate

of diarhhea compared to children given a placebo.

March 1998 ~ CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices

approves the vaccine

August 31, 1998 ~ FDA approves license for the vaccine

October, 1998 ~ Preliminary reports link the rotavirus vaccine with

increased incidence of intusseseption, a rare intestinal condition

causing infolding of one segment of the intestine within another,

leading to persistent vomiting, black or bloody stools, lethargy,

even death. Treatment needed: antibiotics, I.V. fluids, surgical repair.

CDC fact sheet admits that despite rotavirus vaccination, " a large

number of milder cases of rotavirus diarhhea will still occur. . . "

Fall 1998 ~ The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends rotavirus

vaccine be administered to all children at 2, 4, and 6 months old

Fall 1998 ~ Rotavirus vaccination is added to the list of the CDC's

recommended vaccinations

Winter, early 1999 ~ The vaccine is on its way to being added to the

list of MANDATORY vaccines

As more children began getting the vaccine, the Vaccine Adverse

Events Reporting System began getting reports of intussusception in

children who had been vaccinated.

July 15, 1999 ~ the CDC recommends halting the vaccine

July 16, 1999 ~ the American Academy of Pediatrics pulls its support

of the vaccine

Sept. 1999 ~ A press release is issued in which the Association of

American Physicians and Surgeons questions the actions of the CDC and

the FDA regarding implementation of the rotavirus vaccine. Below are

some of the AAPS comments:

" AAPS has . . .concluded that the FDA and CDC may have ignored or

concealed data that showed the problems from the outset. As

increasing numbers of vaccines are being mandated, one has to inquire

whether the rotavirus story is just the tip of the iceberg. . .just

how rigorous is the process of safety testing? What are the

guarantees of the integrity of the process? We believe the process

may have been tainted by conflicts of interest. "
