WILL PRESS ON VOWS SHAMED MMR DOCTOR

Dr Wakefield faces being struck off the medical register

THE doctor accused of professional misconduct over his work suggesting a

possible link between the MMR vaccine and autism has vowed to “redouble”

his research on vaccine safety and the “plight of sick children”.

Dr Wakefield and two colleagues sparked a 12-year controversy

after publishing findings on the combined measles, mumps and rubella

vaccine in the respected medical journal The Lancet in 1998.

The General Medical Council ruled last week that he abused his position

by subjecting children to invasive tests while researching the possible

link between MMR, bowel disease and autism. He faces being struck off the

medical register.

Dr Wakefield, 53, who is continuing his research in the US, is unable to

speak to the press for legal reasons. However, he told a close friend: “I

am now more determined than ever to focus on the science of vaccine

safety and the plight of autistic children who are desperately sick with

bowel disease.” He also told the friend: “My focus has always been

listening to parents, helping children and getting the science on vaccine

safety right. This verdict will deter anyone who is looking at

cutting-edge medicine in teaching hospitals.

‘There is a big gap in the science of vaccine safety’

“I have never been against vaccines. I am pro-vaccines and recommend

taking them, but they have to make sure they are safe and that may mean

splitting them into single components.”

Dr Wakefield’s research led to a dramatic fall in the number of children

being given the MMR jab. The Government has since tried to reassure

parents that the jab is safe.

Jim Moody, a leading vaccine lawyer in America who represents vaccine

damage groups in the US and the UK, said: “This was a show trial. It had

the appearance of a fair trial without the reality. Key documents were

concealed and false statements were made against Dr Wakefield.”

He added: “The bottom line is that there is a big gap in the science of

vaccine safety.”

Dr Halvorsen, author of The Truth About Vaccines, said:

“The judgment given to Dr Wakefield seemed harsh and I suspect there was

a political necessity to come down hard on Dr Wakefield to stifle debate

about the MMR vaccine.”

Dr Wakefield’s former patients remain loyal to him. As he arrived to give

evidence last week he was greeted by several dozen supporters holding

placards declaring he was the victim of a “witch hunt”.

Isabella , whose two sons were under the care of Dr Wakefield and

his team at the Royal Free Hospital in London a decade ago, is furious.

Mrs , whose sons, now 15 and 17, developed autism and bowel disease

after being given the MMR vaccine, told the Sunday Express: “Dr Wakefield

was part of a team of doctors that looked after our children really well.

Now children like mine will be blacklisted and doctors will be afraid to

treat them.”

Dr Wakefield’s former colleagues Professor - and

Professor Simon Murch are also accused of serious professional

misconduct, which they deny. Dr Wakefield and his wife Carmel will return

this week to his new home in Texas and their four children, but he will

return to the UK for the next part of the hearing in April. A final

ruling is expected in summer.
