Re: Question for Non Vaccinated Kids....

shedding could occur... I'm in the group of non vaxers who wishes for natural

immunities. Of course I'm not going to expose my children to life threatening

diseases knowingly. I am on a wait list for a chickenpox party and really wish

my children could get them while they are still young.

here is an explanation...

Shedding is when the live virus that is injected via vaccine, moves through the

human body and comes back out in the feces, droplets from the nose, or saliva

from the mouth. Anyone who takes care of the child could potentially contract

the disease for some time after that child has received certain live vaccines.

This was a huge problem with the oral polio vaccine, and was one of the reasons

why it was taken off the market in the US.

I really need to get my boys into a chicken pox party soon. I was hoping for

this summer. If anyone knows of one going on in the virginia area, let me know.

Thanks.

Only the live virus vaccines are capable of shedding. Those are rotavirus, MMR,

chickenpox, and oral polio (which isn't used anymore in the U.S.) Many

non-vaccinating parents, including myself, WANT their kids to be exposed to

those diseases (excluding polio). But even with polio, the majority of cases

are asymptomatic, and of the cases that do produce symptoms, most are no worse

than a regular cold. Only an extremely low percent of cases result in

paralysis, and most of the time it is temporary. I would be a little nervous

about going to India, but not nervous enough to get my kids vaccinated for

polio.

A couple of comments: Anything coming out of a vaccine is not the same thing as the "real" disease. Exposing your child to newly vaccinated kids, if they catch anything, will not result in immunity to a natural disease.

Also, polio actually being a disease is debatable. So, it's tricky to compare it to other diseases. I'm sure Sheri can point you towards her info on that.

One more thing, I agree with not being nervous enough to get my kids vaxed for polio, either. But keep in mind that vaccines don't work anyway and that's a much better reason to avoid vaccines.
