Vitamin K Shot at Birth

I'm due with my 3rd this Spring and this is one decision I am having a hard time researching. My other two children received the shot (when I was VERY ignorant of vaccines altogether) but this time we have decided "NO" for all routine newborn procedures but we're still stuck on this one.

I'm just as upset as you are!

You are not stuck on this! If you breastfeed then you can elect to get an oral

vitamin K for yourself. It will go into your breastmilk. However, if you are

using formula, it already has high doses of vitamin K in it and you don't need

to supplement with a shot. There's research out there you can take to your

doctor to prove this. I don't have it off hand though. But I have seen it and

read it some years ago. It took me a little bit of talking to my last doc to

get him to agree to give NOTHING to the baby and we did end up giving up

erythromycin in the eyes, but not the K shot.

You are going to have to be strong when talking to your doctor because if they

feel they can deter you, they will try the best they can.

Good luck.

I refused vitamin K with both of my babies, two boys who are now ages five years and ten months.  I had my wishes recorded in a written Birth Plan both times, although with my first baby we refused vitamin K simply by firmly telling them, " No. "     (I didn't have enough time to even show them my Birth Plan before my first son was born, because he was born about five minutes after I arrived at the hospital, almost in the car!)  I did not take any oral/liquid vitamin K supplements either for myself or the baby.

If you're giving birth in a hospital, you'll have to vigilantly keep an eye on the baby and voice your refusal, as vitamin K is a " routine procedure, " which they could easily sneak past you.  I kept mine in the room with me at all times or had a family member accompany them.

Both of my childbirths were drug-free, walking through labor/transition, and delivering my second son in a kneeling position.  I  breastfed my first son until he was almost four years old and am currently breastfeeding the baby, and both of my children were/are very healthy, beautiful, and smart.  I also refused the PKU newborn blood screening (heal cut), circumcision, hepatitis B vaccine, and the newborn hearing screening with both of mine.  Also, I never go to " well-child " pediatric visits, since I don't vaccinate.

Wish you the best!
