Isn't it funny? The docs flatly proclaimed something without testing. No need for that silly stuff when they can just tell. But when a lowly mom can tell, she's pooh-poohed.

Refresh my memory? Was she vaccinated?

Yep, don’t question the almighty gods in the white coat or

take the risk of incurring their wrath! Bring it on doc! I’ve

already called to report him!

AND he must have missed a few days of anatomy class in med

school, because he said her parotid glands were in the front of her face on

either side of her nose, and they were NOT swollen. DUH! That’s

because they’re located by the ears by the neck and jaw!

I guess our “family” doc needs to brush up on his

infectious diseases, too, since he rudely brushed off my concerns, too!

Yes, she had 2 MMRs, 1 when she was a toddler (that gave her a

temp of 103) and one when she was 5.

I am sure the mono made the mumps worse or even that the lower resistance of the

mumps might have brought back on her mono. Poor Girl! I feel so bad for all

she has gone through! AND the STUPID doctors! Ugh. I so know what that is

like, btdt.

Hope she is better soon!

Moms do know -- when will doctors learn to take our instinct seriously.

So glad the fever finally broke and I hope she'll soon be feeling better.

I was treated VERY rudely by the ER doctor who scoffed at the idea that it could POSSIBLY be mumps.  He said they would test for mono and strep.  I insisted they test for mumps, too.  He got in my face and said, “WHAT test should I order?!”  I said, “An ANTIGEN test.”  He stormed out of the room.  He waltzed back in the room later to say her mono test was positive.  I asked about the mumps test.  He said that one was sent off.

We went to our “family” doctor on Monday to get the rest of her test results (it had been years since she was there, and they couldn’t even find her file!)  THAT quack brushed me off, too, even though she has ALL of the symptoms of adult mumps with complications (pancreatic pain, ovarian pain, swollen and painful breasts, etc.)   He totally ignored me when I was telling him her symptoms (she couldn’t talk to tell him herself).  When I finally backed him in a corner about it, he said “She does NOT have mumps.”

We got the call this morning that the lab results came back POSITIVE for mumps!   A mother KNOWS these things!

Her fever finally broke last night, after 8 days straight of 101-104 temps.  She was a very sick young lady with mono and mumps.  Very strange.

Thank you, . It’s so discouraging to know that even in an

emergency, we can’t count on the doctors to do the right thing! That’s why it’s

so important for parents to be educated and be strong advocates for their children’s

health.

Kay, you are so welcome.  I've been there and it's frustrating when they make you feel like an uneducated idiot.

And we also need to be strong advocates for our husbands too.  DH trusts doctors way more than I do.

I'm sorry to hear what hell she went through. What a ridiculous experience all

around for you!

May I ask, out of curiosity... what did these docs suggest as treatment? Insane

that you'd have to fight for the right tests, but that is what it is coming to

these days.

Same here with my dh. Fortunately he’s starting to see the

light. He’s come a long way in the past few years! He even refused a tetanus

shot after getting a fish hook in his eyelid about 4 years ago! I was so proud
