The white oval and hard, rock-like specks aren't mites, they are a manifestation of a chronic fungal/bacterial infection. It's common for them to show up on the scalp, though at one point I had them coming out of every surface of my body.AandrayaOn Aug 24, 2011, at 12:23 PM, wrote: Hi, I have been living with some type of mite for over 3 months, since the end of May. I put the sheets in my car that fateful day in the back seat with no bag and drove home and later put them on the bed. I had a really bad infestation shortly after with things flying in the air but could not actually see anything I guess because it was mostly at night. So, I don't think this is the Northern mite -- my guess is either the red mite or something else. I did see some red mites on my porch early spring and also in my mother's back yard before any of this happened. There are a few more details -- last winter I made a cat house for my mother's ferral cats and put some really sticky straw in the trunk of my car. I wonder if that isn't where it started? I no longer drive my car -- it is too infested. I ripped out my carpet 2 months ago in my 1 story condo, but still things are not right. Has anyone had a similar experience where the mites go directly to your scalp and feel like rock candy stuck on? I used some Neem oil yesterday which seemed to help, but of course they get back on now. I just try different things. They also get under my toenails and I feel pinprick bites among other things. Thanks.

I had those too at one time . I agree with what Aandraya said about that. From: "Aandraya Da Silva" <aandraya@...>bird mites Sent: Wednesday, August 24, 2011 10:34:19 AMSubject: Re: What type of mite prefers your scalp?

I can feel them hop on my scalp from different objects in my house. Yes, when

they first started they were jumping like mites on top of my head wildly. Now

they aren't so wild, but they try to burrow into my scalp. Very weird. I used

to be a normal person...

Most of us here were "normal" until this happened. If they are jumping they may be Springtails (collembola). From: "whatstheuse2" <terelynjon@...>bird mites Sent: Wednesday, August 24, 2011 10:49:30 AMSubject: Re: What type of mite prefers your scalp?

I cannot actually see them. The doctor at Patient First could not see them

either. My extended family does not really understand b/c no one can see these

mites even though I now they are there. I am the only one suffering. I can

feel them at my mother's house, but she does not feel them, nor my step-dad or

brother who live there.

Can you see Springtails? Yes, this is something that has driven me to almost

the end of the rope. Actually, I am at the end of the rope -- just tied a knot

and hanging on. I hope to start copining better. :)

As Aandraya wrote, mites are not hard. While it sounds most likely to be fungus as described by Aandraya & , if you've recently had headlice is it possible the hard white oval things are nits? Have the headlice definitely been killed as they are notoriously resistant to most safe forms of insecticide.

The types of bird mites that affect humans do not jump, fly, or burrow (there are some bird mites which burrow but they are not documented as affecting humans in any way). If they jump are springtails a possibility? I gather they are often found with fungus.

The red mites you saw on your porch & in your mother's back garden probably were not bird mites; there are some bright red coloured mites which are common outside in gardens. Red poultry mites do not like daylight & are most usually seen (if seen at all) at night.

If you have feral cats, it is possible you have picked up sacoptic mange (burrowing mites) from them? Not saying it will definitely work, but if you're using neem oil, the heavy stinky kind is best, & needs to be used for at least three days running.

If they jump they are probably collembola, I had those. Just know that it gets better and really does get better. I know the first year in our experience is the worst, but don't consider doing anything to yourself so forget the rope! You will see. So many have been where you are emotionally and physically with this. I was. I wanted to throw a match into the house and let it burn down as I saw that as the only option. But we have our house back. Yes, you can see Springtails and they hop. I don't know if we had them as I saw nothing except specks which turned out to be fibers tightly wound up and coming out of my skin, going back in too. Lots of things you can do to help you cope. Krys suggested the herb Valerian for relaxation and it helps me get to sleep. True, it has been a long journey, so you'll need things to help you cope with the situation if you do have bird mites. If you have mites, you might want to get the predatory mites to put in your house as Aggi did. She had great success with them in her car. She is not 100%, but very close in a fairly short period of time. I wish we had known about them before we threw half of our belongings out, but oh well. From: "whatstheuse2" <terelynjon@...>bird mites Sent: Wednesday, August 24, 2011 11:00:55 AMSubject: Re: What type of mite prefers your scalp?

Can you see Springtails? Yes, this is something that has driven me to almost the end of the rope. Actually, I am at the end of the rope -- just tied a knot and hanging on.

Yes, you can see some of them, though most are microscopic. Once you start treating chronic bacterial and fungal infections, and possibly protozoal, the insects won't be attracted to you anymore. I cannot feel what is on my scalp with my hand -- it is too tiny. But I feel

microscopic invisible mites all day, mostly at night. The question is why are

they going to my scalp. They are also going to my toenails now too. I get pin

prick bites on my feet and legs mostly at night or whenever I step on one of

them.

Does anyone notice them in your keyboard? I have been through 6 or 7 keyboards

in the last 3 months. I now leave the plastic cover on and wipe it off each day

until I have to replace it entirely. I think they are in the grooves between

the keys.

One more thing to have to live with.
