I was just thinking - it would be a waste to release these predatory mites to an area that has been treated - like Earth Diamacious - I know my car has all kinds of crap I tried including baking soda and E Diamacioues. I hope there is a way you can vacuum all the stuff in the seats and carpeting before releasing them.

That sounds really good Aggi. Thanks for finding the Latin name. The Hypoaspis was the genus, though not the exact species of the predatory mite in the paper which was not implicated in biting humans. I have my fingers crossed & look forward to hearing how it goes. Now we know the latin name we can find out how to get them in other countries. :~)Good luck with the venture.Best wishesKrys

I have also just spoken with Refona and they assured me that these predators with the Latin name 'Hypoaspis Miles' do not attack human beings. I am going to take the chance as it can't get any worse in my car... have already ordered 6 mite booster cartridges for it. Please keep your fingers crossed that this is going to work as this is my very last straw now. I'll keep you updated !

Thanks for the the research -

Yes - it worries me a little as well - I would like to try them in my car, but still, they could be carried elsewhere and either be a great blessing or a horrible new problem to deal with. I wish we could find people who have tried it.

From: Zelie Z <zelie417@...>bird mites Sent: Mon, June 6, 2011 6:12:20 AMSubject: Re: Re: anyone tried predator mites?

I contacted Refona and they confirmed that the predatory mites do not attack mammals or reptiles, only other mites.

I think they mistook me for a bird breeder (the irony isn't lost on me) and advised me to use invermectin on the birds and treat the area with the predatory mites :)

I'm tempted to try them but I am a bit worried. Even if they don't bite, I have this image in my mind of being overrun with mites - again! I will post an update if I decide to take the plunge.

Zélie

Supposedly these predatory creatures devour every last mite+eggs and then turn on each other - don't know how fast they might evolve and look elsewhere in survival mode??? don't know if the bacteria and poop that they leave behind is less then any other bug.

Scary -- but still - the possibilities are intriguing. I no longer live the horror. After 9 months I am left with nothing more than the sensations and allergic reactions to dust mites and various bacteria.

Currently these predatory bugs are used to save crops and trees threatened by mites etc. Haven't heard of any being released in a home. And exterminators are making too much money on the stuff that doesn't work, they wouldn't want to put themselves out of business by introducing a new and cheaper way which would not require follow-up treatment!

It's scary - but I would be tempted to release them in my car after more research.

I am still interested in whatever anyone else can find out about the subject.

I would be very nervous about using predator mites Aggi. With all the bioengineering of insects and other things, I'd be afraid that it might have some parasites or something else. Maybe there is nothing to worry about, but with anything like a mite, I know myself and I would worry that things might get out of control. If they got rid of the birdmites, how would you finally get rid of them?

I would throw that pillow out -- not sure how much they would charge to dry clean it. I got so used to throw-away Walmart $3.50 foam pollows, I still buy a new one once in the while.

But my problem is mainly my Toyota Camry, keep getting bites in it, I use the Jeep Wrangler most of the time, no carpets, no cloth seats, NO BUGS.

What do you think about the predatory mite idea?

The article said 6 weeks since pesticides, and the temp must be above freezing,

they will die. For the car perhaps get a shop vac and wet carpet with sprayers,

then vac up? It will be difficult. My old car had a ton of DE in it:(

I use the bed bug covers for my pillows. Wash pillow case or spray with

wintergreen or regular rubbing alcohol before bed. You can also do this to the

bed.

Can down be washed? I threw our expensive down comforters when I got mites 3-1/2 years ago. Figured that would be a safe harbor for them, so that went to the dump. Had a lot of new stuff too. If your girlfriend can't part with that down pillow, I'd definitely buy one of these covers that Marie sent the link for--Probably about $10 including shipping. And, it isn't plastic which is hard for some people to get used to because of how noisy plastic is and pillow cases slip off plastic easily. I don't know if birdmites could enter the pillow after that if dust mites can't enter it. I'd consider putting the down pillow first in the oven at 150 degrees for 1-2 hours not touching any part of the oven except the rack. Cover rack with baking paper. Then put the new cover on the pillow. Re: Fry labs finds a protozoa in blood
