Guest guest
Supposedly these predatory creatures devour every last mite+eggs and then turn on each other - don't know how fast they might evolve and look elsewhere in survival mode??? don't know if the bacteria and poop that they leave behind is less then any other bug. Scary -- but still - the possibilities are intriguing. I no longer live the horror. After 9 months I am left with nothing more than the sensations and allergic reactions to dust mites and various bacteria. Currently these predatory bugs are used to save crops and trees threatened by mites etc. Haven't heard of any being released in a home. And exterminators are making too much money on the stuff that doesn't work, they wouldn't want to put themselves out of business by introducing a new and cheaper way which would not require follow-up treatment! It's scary - but I would be tempted to release them in my car after more research. I am still interested in whatever anyone else can find out about the subject. Guest guest
The mites being used are very specific. The mites being sold to control mites in crops are Phytoseilus persimilis, which are naturally occuring in the wild & specifically feed on types of spider mite. I could be wrong but without doing more research I think that once they've eaten all the spider mites they probably starve to death. http://www.nhm.ac.uk/nature-online/species-of-the-day/scientific-advances/bio-control/phytoseiulus-persimilis/index.html The type of mites being described on the site Aggi found have been registered, under the trade name of " Dutchy's " , on the website they are described as being members of the family Laelapidae. I found a paper in which they were investigating predatory mites found in nature which eat Dermayssus gallinae (red poultry mite). Three of the species of predatory mites found were of the family Laelapidae. However, that said there was a previous paper, from Israel, where they sited one of those predatory mites named as being the cause of dermatitis by biting humans. It was knowledge of this earlier paper which prompted the people exploring naturally ocurring predatory mites, to do their own experiments to investigate whether these predatory mites sucked blood directly from the nestlings or birds & concluded that they did not, in fact they concluded that these predtory mites did not have the type of mouth parts which would be needed in order to break though skin to suck blood.I did attach the research paper in an earlier reply to Aggi but if anyone wants me to repost the paper just let me know.Best wishesKrysOn 5 June 2011 01:03, Doris Kennedy <kean2465@...> wrote: Supposedly these predatory creatures devour every last mite+eggs and then turn on each other - don't know how fast they might evolve and look elsewhere in survival mode??? don't know if the bacteria and poop that they leave behind is less then any other bug. Guest guest
Well, it is & it isn't. If the mites registered as " Dutchy's " are he mites implicated in the Israeli paper one might want to think twice until more info on Androlaelaps casalis can be found. Here is the abstract of the Israeli paper http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1046/j.1365-2915.2002.00386.x/abstractIt might have been helpful if we could have read the whole paper, but thus far, I have been unable to track down a full copy of the paper. Guest guest
For myself, Krys, I am grateful to have you break it down to the bottom line. Thank you, kajayFrom: Krys Brennand <krys109uk@...>bird mites Sent: Sun, June 5, 2011 12:41:45 PMSubject: Re: Re: anyone tried predator mites? The mites being used are very specific. The mites being sold to control mites in crops are Phytoseilus persimilis, which are naturally occuring in the wild & specifically feed on types of spider mite. I could be wrong but without doing more research I think that once they've eaten all the spider mites they probably starve to death. http://www.nhm.ac.uk/nature-online/species-of-the-day/scientific-advances/bio-control/phytoseiulus-persimilis/index.html The type of mites being described on the site Aggi found have been registered, under the trade name of "Dutchy's", on the website they are described as being members of the family Laelapidae. Guest guest
I contacted Refona and they confirmed that the predatory mites do not attack mammals or reptiles, only other mites. I think they mistook me for a bird breeder (the irony isn't lost on me) and advised me to use invermectin on the birds and treat the area with the predatory mites I'm tempted to try them but I am a bit worried. Guest guest
Hi Doris and Zelie, I have also just spoken with Refona and they assured me that these predators with the Latin name 'Hypoaspis Miles' do not attack human beings. I am going to take the chance as it can't get any worse in my car... have already ordered 6 mite booster cartridges for it. Please keep your fingers crossed that this is going to work as this is my very last straw now. Guest guest
That sounds really good Aggi. Thanks for finding the Latin name. The Hypoaspis was the genus, though not the exact species of the predatory mite in the paper which was not implicated in biting humans. I have my fingers crossed & look forward to hearing how it goes. Now we know the latin name we can find out how to get them in other countries. :~)Good luck with the venture.Best wishesKrysOn 6 June 2011 11:21, Aggi Assmann <aggi_assmann@...> wrote: Hi Doris and Zelie, I have also just spoken with Refona and they assured me that these predators with the Latin name 'Hypoaspis Miles' do not attack human beings. I am going to take the chance as it can't get any worse in my car... have already ordered 6 mite booster cartridges for it. Please keep your fingers crossed that this is going to work as this is my very last straw now. Even if they don't bite, I have this image in my mind of being overrun with mites - again! I will post an update if I decide to take the plunge. Zélie Supposedly these predatory creatures devour every last mite+eggs and then turn on each other - don't know how fast they might evolve and look elsewhere in survival mode??? don't know if the bacteria and poop that they leave behind is less then any other bug. Scary -- but still - the possibilities are intriguing. I no longer live the horror. Guest guest
I can't wait to hear how it works, this is soooo exciting to me. So gald yhou are ordering it. From: Aggi Assmann <aggi_assmann@...>bird mites Sent: Mon, June 6, 2011 11:21:39 AMSubject: Re: Re: anyone tried predator mites? Hi Doris and Zelie, I have also just spoken with Refona and they assured me that these predators with the Latin name 'Hypoaspis Miles' do not attack human beings. I am going to take the chance as it can't get any worse in my car... have already ordered 6 mite booster cartridges for it. Please keep your fingers crossed that this is going to work as this is my very last straw now. I'll keep you updated ! --- Doris Kennedy <kean2465@...> schrieb am Mo, 6.6.2011: Von: Doris Kennedy <kean2465@...>Betreff: Re: Re: anyone tried predator mites? An: bird mites Datum: Montag, 6. Juni, 2011 15:15 Uhr Thanks for the the research - Yes - it worries me a little as well - I would like to try them in my car, but still, they could be carried elsewhere and either be a great blessing or a horrible new problem to deal with. I wish we could find people who have tried it. From: Zelie Z <zelie417@...>bird mites Sent: Mon, June 6, 2011 6:12:20 AMSubject: Re: Re: anyone tried predator mites? I contacted Refona and they confirmed that the predatory mites do not attack mammals or reptiles, only other mites. I think they mistook me for a bird breeder (the irony isn't lost on me) and advised me to use invermectin on the birds and treat the area with the predatory mites I'm tempted to try them but I am a bit worried. With all the bioengineering of insects and other things, I'd be afraid that it might have some parasites or something else. Maybe there is nothing to worry about, but with anything like a mite, I know myself and I would worry that things might get out of control. If they got rid of the birdmites, how would you finally get rid of them? Guest guest
Hi Aggie,I'm also hoping the predatory mites will be the answer; what an excellent discovery you made. Of course the people are running a business & want to make money, but equally they wouldn't want to get a bad reputation by marketing something not fit for the purpose for which it is being sold. So fingers crossed. I'm optimistic for you & am looking into UK sources for that particular species of mite, or the another closely related species, Hypoaspis aculeifer , so I can order some for my mother. ;~) I have convinced my mother she ought to try MSM. It does sound like it has helped many people. Having to go through the routine at all is obviously difficult, but thing are a lot better than they were a month or so ago. ThanksKrysOn 6 June 2011 16:27, Aggi <aggi_assmann@...> wrote: Hi Krys, I am pretty much excited now if these guys could end all my misery. Hope it wasn't just a good marketing strategy :-) Time will tell... Like many of the others here stated already, I am also very happy having someone like you around. It is underneath the coppice and heath, And the thin anemones. Only the keeper sees That, where the ring-dove broods, And the badgers roll at ease, There was once a road through the woods. Yet, if you enter the woods Of a summer evening late, When the night-air cools on the trout-ringed pools Where the otter whistles his mate. (They fear not men in the woods, Because they see so few) You will hear the beat of a horse's feet, And the swish of a skirt in the dew, Steadily cantering through The misty solitudes, As though they perfectly knew The old lost road through the woods…. Guest guest
I wonder what the company uses to feed the mites while they are growing their populations of mites before sending to people. Do they eat just mites - Marie mentioned that they eat springtails too? Guest guest
I wonder if it is legal to import these mites. If it works it may be the best thing out there because they could crawl into spaces where birdmites hide, floor boards, ceilings, behind walls into crawl spaces, etc. L. Guest guest
, If you do a search for the Latin name, you will find sources in US; it is highly unlikely that one would be allowed to buy from overseas. http://store.evergreengrowers.com/prostores/servlet/Detail?no=1 Best wishesKrysOn 7 June 2011 10:33, <Goldstein@...> wrote: I wonder if it is legal to import these mites. Weather and rain have undone it again, And now you would never know There was once a road through the woods Before they planted the trees. But there is no road through the woods. The Way Through the Woods - Rudyard Kipling
