Guest guest
Hi there, Been to 3 different pharmacies here in Germany and they did not know what flower of sulfur is. Then i asked for the lye soap and they asked me about the ph as there are different ones and i just do not know. I am getting desperate with my scalp and hair, i just can't get them out there, tried tea tree oil, sulfur 8 conditioner, selsun blue shampoo, dr. bronner's magic shampoo peppermint did no magic at all. All these remedies only work temporarily. Any other suggestions ? Wish i'd still lived in the States ... > > Hi! > Just wanted to know if flower of sulfur is the same as MSM? > > C > > > > ________________________________ >
Guest guest
The pH of homemade soap is an important indicator that the soap is safe to use, but not for the reason most people think! Many people believe that a soap with a lower pH is more " mild " , but without expensive lab equipment, soap testing is just not accurate enough to give us the precise pH. Instead, we use testing to check that our soaps are within the normal pH of soap, from 7 to 10. This assures us that there is no free lye remaining in the soap (lye has a pH of 14) and that the soap is safe to use. This is critical. Free lye in soap is just as caustic and painful as the lye water we used to make the soap, and nobody wants to discover that their soap is " lye heavy " in the middle of a shower! The pH scale is organized so that 7 (the pH of water) is " neutral " . Values less than 7 indicate acids (the lower the number, the more acidic the item) and values higher than 7 indicate bases (the higher than number, the more basic the item.) As a quick point of reference: pH 0 - hydrochloric acid pH 2 - lemon juice pH 7 - water pH 9 - baking soda ph 10 - milk of magnesia ph 14 - lye! You want your soap to have a pH between 7-10. This is the range that is considered safe to use. Above 10 indicates that your soap is harsh, and may have " free lye " (lye that didn't react with your oils, and can burn you if you use the soap!) You might end up with free lye if you made an error measuring your ingredients (for example, if you used too much lye, or not enough oil), or if you used a recipe that did not calculate the amount of lye correctly. Soap Testing: Three Ways to Check Your Soap's pH 1. The Traditional " Tongue Test " Soap makers will just barely tap the tip of their tongue to a fresh bar of soap. An electric zing, as if touching your tongue to a battery, indicates lye-heavy soap that is not safe to use. (The only problem is, who wants to risk lye burns on their tongue? Not me!) 2. pH Test Strips Soap makers who value their tongues have turned to pH testing strips. The strip can detect the pH of a drop of water placed on fresh soap. Unfortunately, because of the way soap interacts with water, the readings are not highly accurate. The test strips can make your soap appear to have a lower pH than it really does. 3. Phenolphthalein This leaves us with one last method: phenolphthalein (pronounced as " FEE-nol-THAL-een " ). Phenolphthalein is a liquid that can be applied, one drop at a time, to soap. It turns pink when it touches a base. The darker the shade of pink, the higher the pH reading. You won't get an exact pH value, but you will be able to tell, quickly and easily, how far along the pH scale your soap is. To use phenolphthalein, wait until your soap has completely cured (6-8 weeks for cold-process soap). Cut a bar of soap, and place a drop or two of phenolphthalein on the cut edge (so that you are testing the " inside " of the bar). Wait for the color of the drops to stabilize, and see what you have. If it's clear or light pink, your soap is safe to use. If it's darker, proceed with caution! The darkest shades indicate that the soap is dangerously heavy in lye, and should not be used, though you may be able to save it using rebatching, if you're feeling brave. > > > > Hi! > > Just wanted to know if flower of sulfur is the same as MSM? > > > > C > > > > > > > > ________________________________ > > >
Guest guest
Aggi Try asking the pharmacist about brimstone sulfur, or yellow sulfur. This may be for cosmetic use only and not ingestion. You might also check with a garden center. Testing the pH of your soap is an easy way to be sure that your soap is safe to use, and doesn't contain any extra lye. The pH scale shows the strength of an acid or base. Soap with a high pH (above 10) is likely to be too harsh, or lye-heavy, for use. So the higher the pH the stronger the soap, do not use anything over 10. > > > > Hi! > > Just wanted to know if flower of sulfur is the same as MSM? > > > > C > > > > > > > > ________________________________ > > >

Guest guest
Hi Marie, Thank you so much for educating me, very interesting ! You sound like a good chemist or pharmacist yourself :-) Will go back and ask for brimstone or yellow sulfur though. If they don't have it probably order at Penn Herbs. Still can't get my head around this is happening to me and to all of us here. Almost 2 years now. Think i must have been a bad person in my previous life... Hope you're still making progress taking the MMS. Guess i am not desperate enough for trying it - yet. The MSM and DE internally is helping a lot. Still getting bothered by the mites, but they do not bite as hard anymore. Eating garlic in my dinner also helps to some extend. Guest guest
Aggi This is hard to wrap your head around. You are sane this exist. I have made progress and feel like the worst is behind me. The MMS was a large part but many things come into play. The insecticides, the soap, laundry, yard treatment all important. The MMS using topically should not be a great concern, ingestion is the controversy. For the money MMS cannot be beat. And no I am not a pharmacist, I am now just a retired farmer and loving it:) Healing hugs back > > > > > > > > > > Hi! > > > > > Just wanted to know if flower of sulfur is the same as MSM? > > > > > > > > > > C > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > ________________________________ > > > > > > > > > > > > > > >

Guest guest
Hi Aggi I used sulfur for 3 years . It is soothing & is a good helper to stop the itch .. It has a horrible smell & will not wash out of clothes , or the dryer. I haven't used a dryer in 5 years , I boil my clothes & wash them in Arm & Hammer Powdered Laundry Detergent then hang & dry in a 'clean' .area ( room coated with 1 cup borax , & 1 cup Arm & Hammer Powdered Laundry Detergent & 1 gal water on everyrthing. Will they allow sulfur to be mailed into germany ? . It is very rarely sold at paharmacies where I live In Michigan. After calling many pharmacies I did find a one that would mix sulfur in petroleum jelly , the called it precipatated sulfur , it heals cuts sell and is pretty mild, it does make the skin dry ,so I would have to stop using it after 7-10 days & give my skin a break. Th borax & peroxide worked much faster & better. & n also the Arm & Hammer Powdered Laundry Detergent 1 cup per bath was amazing for the skin hair & eyes , I soaked for 30 mins in the tub.It & still use 3 teasp & 1 cup of water every 5-10 days if I get a bite. It is he best for the scalp. So is msm 4 100 mg tabs & 3 oz of water , mix & dump on head & leave it on to dry , it is invisible & no smell or burn. Order sublimed flowers of sulfur made by Humco from www.americarx.com mix in an opaque or clear small dishwashing soap bottle 1 teasp coconut oil (or any oil ) 1 teasp sulfur ( then shake well ) 7-9 teasp of sulfur , shake hard for 20 seconds . Apply top of head to toe & leave on. , Supposedly there is a scentless sulfur , I didn't notice much difference when I mixed it : here is an old post about sulfur OLD POST PASTED : Message -----From: healinghopebird mites@...: Wednesday, September 15, 2010 11:58 AMSubject: Re: How to get rid of the sulfur smell?Judy I believe the Humco is technical grade?Product FeaturesSulfur Powder Sublimed Features Flowers of sulfur For technical use only.Humco Sulfur Sublimed Powder used in prescription compounding skin preparations not for personal use.http://www.amazon.com/Sulfur-Powder-Sublimed-Oz-Pack/dp/B0013ND5AKThe sulfur from Penn Herbs is odorless and pharmaceutical grade. The body uses Sulphur to maintain bone and joint health as well. I haven't had new bumps in weeks, and I hardly itch at all anymore. After I used Ivermectin 2 times, with Permethrin, I started using Sulfur mixed with lotion every few days. It seemed to work better than anything else. I'm still keeping up on the cleaning, and I'm still using the sulfur for a little while more until I'm completely sure all of the scabies are gone. All of the spots where my skin was starting to turn purple from all of the burrows is healing up, and my skin's almost back to normal. I saw the quickest and best results right after I started using sulfur. For any one who hasn't tried sulfur yet and nothing else seems to work, I suggest you get some right away. Uses in metal patina application Liver of Sulfur. I see so much mis-info on the Etsy Forums. " Sulfurated potash (Liver of Sulfur) is a poorly defined mixture of potassium sulfide, potassium polysulfide, potassium thiosulfate, and probably potassium bisulfide. Synonyms include hepar sulfuris, Liver of sulfur, sulfurated potash, sulfurated potassa. Liver of sulfur is mainly used in metalworking to form a patina, turning copper alloys brown or black. " When you purchase Liver of Sulfur (LOS) you will receive a container of small yellow rocks. You will dissolve a small (dime size) piece in plain hot tap water, swirl or stir (I use a bamboo skewer) until dissolved and then submerge your metal piece to produce the black 'oxidized' surface finish that is seen so much on Etsy. My jar (pic on right) is three weeks old. I made a LOS solution- and keep it tightly capped under the kitchen sink. When I need to patina a piece, I will fill the sink with the hottest tap water, place the jewelry piece in the LOS, close the lid and put the jar in the sink full of water. I check the piece of jewelry every five minutes until the desired color is achieved. If left in to long, you will have black flakes- which can be removed with a light brushing with an old toothbrush. Rinse your jewelry well and Dry thoroughly. Now you can leave completely dark, or polish the raised areas for a contrast of light and dark. If your client is allergic to eggs, there is the potential for a reaction to a LOS patina piece. Have a wonderful, creative day. peace~ Posted by Tango K at 7/02/2009 09:16:00 AM Labels: jewelry, liver of sulfur, los, patina, tang 6. Guest guest
Hi Bill, Many thanks for your mail. Had missed it and am just reading it now. I agree with you on the sulfur, it seems to be the only clue with those mites. I have meanwhile been able to purchase a sulfur soap bar plus a sulfur bath in the pharmacy. Flower of sulfur or lye i couldn't get hold of, asked in different pharmacies. Arm & Hammer and Borax is also not available in Germany. I just had a first dip in the sulfur bath and yes, it dries out pretty much, but the mites are leaving me alone tonight, although it is late at night where they're usually most active. I'd probably try to order online at Penn Herbs next, coz i prefer the odourless quality, but will first see how it works with the sulfur products i have just got. Taking the MSM and DE internally is still helping a lot. You seem to be quite a mite expert Bill. How long have you been fighting these horrible bugs and where did you get them from? I am so grateful for all the nice and helpful people on this forum, including you. God bless you too Aggi > >> > >> Hi! > >> Just wanted to know if flower of sulfur is the same as MSM? > >> > >> C > >> > >> > >> > >> ________________________________ > >> > > > > >
