This " clearly shows, " Dr. Weinberg continued, " that

antibody responses are irrelevant for protection against the severity of

zoster. "

when one doesn't work, 2 might, 5 might, 10 might.

" The implication, " she concluded, " is that increasing

the number of vaccine doses or the amount of antigen in the vaccine may

generate more vigorous immune responses in the very old

adults. "

Dr. Weinberg of the University of Colorado Denver and colleagues

studied 981 subjects, 60 years and older, who took part in a

placebo-controlled zoster vaccine trial and developed herpes zoster. They

were compared with 1362 trial subjects who did not develop the

disease.

Robust varicella-zoster virus cell-mediated immunity correlated with

reduced herpes zoster morbidity. Such responses to herpes zoster and to

zoster vaccine were comparable. In contrast to cell-mediated immunity,

varicella-zoster virus antibody responses did not correlate with

protection.

This " clearly shows, " Dr. Weinberg continued, " that

antibody responses are irrelevant for protection against the severity of

zoster. "

She added that people more than 70 years of age " respond

less well to the zoster vaccine than those 60 to 69 years of age. "

However, it appears " possible to augment the cell-mediated immune

response of these very old adults by increasing the amount of antigen

that they are exposed to. "

" The implication, " she concluded, " is that

increasing the number of vaccine doses or the amount of antigen in the

vaccine may generate more vigorous immune responses in the very old

adults. "
