Guest guest
Kathy, Organic pullets (@ 18 weeks) ready to start laying eggs will go for $5.50 to $6 per hen. Most growers will follow some sort of vaccination schedule- depending on what they need to deal with in the grower house and where the hens are going. I may decide to grow a flock of 1200 from day-old chicks but not until July. I'd be happy to help (advice if needed) start your livestock part of the school. Sounds really ambitious and interesting. She was pregnant and got sick, in the hospital a couple days, then OK. My dad and I didn't get it and we all lived together. The only bird we had was a parakeet and we ate family style meals. There was another bird flu in the late 1960's. Neither was an epidemic and I think people sometimes forget that. I read one of the best selling bird flu books written by a MD and part of the book was about HSUS saying one difference is the unhealthy living conditions of birds today. I do have a couple questions for folks who raise chickens. We plan to get a small flock of layers this summer. We hope to open the school in 2009 and I think it will be fun to start raising some before then to educate ourselves. Is there a better place to purchase young layers? What are chickens vaccinated for and is that important or not? When I raised dogs, I vaccinated dogs myself against the deadly diseases and skipped the rest. My dogs didn't get sick because Will taught me about nutrition 25 years ago. Doing rescue work was a real eye opener. If you raise animals close to how mother nature intended, most don't get sick, or it is mild. Very sick dogs can often recover with TLC and proper nutrition. We have had more than one we called Lazarus. Kathy
Guest guest
Why wasn't there a vax for the bird flu? I remember that a couple years ago, and it was really pushed that we were all going to die from the bird flu at some point. I can't believe big pharma would have let a chance like that go. Guest guest
It's called setting the stage. Prime the public to expect an inevitable pandemic, then when it comes, it's not a surprise and we'll be ready to roll up our sleeves. This has been a long time in the making. Guest guest
You're right. They know how to promote their business. President Bush suggested that US stockpile 10 Billion dollars worth of the bird flu vaccine. It was a big score for Rumsfeld and his drug company. Others also profited besides Bush and Rumsfeld. Schults was also in on it. bird flu Why wasn't there a vax for the bird flu? Guest guest
They were trying as I recall. I was in nursing school at the time. My own personal belief is that they have been working their way up to this.... working out the " bugs " over several of these scares. There was also SARS not too far distant in time. One thing that I learned at the protest was that both houses of the NYS legislature did NOT pass the Gov and DOH heads initial request to mandate the shots. It FAILED. Then because the CDC labelled it a level 6 pandemic that solved the problem...no legislative approval needed because it is a " pandemic " . so they got their way by making the voting bodies impotent. I can only say that I can only conclude this head of the CDC and the Gov and the head of the DOH in NYS MUST be in bed with the pharma cos. I can't see how else this would happen. And how is it that the president doesn't reign in this CDC person and/or replace her for someone who can read epidemiological data? I have no trust in anything anymore.
