Guest guest
Several years ago when my son was being treat at Duke University for a terminal illness, I disagreed with the doctor concerning a method of treatment. I wanted to do something he considered " experimental " . I reminded him that he had convinced me to sign my son up for multiple drug trials in an effort to save his life and that all of them had been experimental. I asked him if he had a business card. He handed me his card and I read it out loud " Dr. XXXX, MD I'm not so sure you realize what the MD stands for. It means Medical Doctor, not Medical Diety! So, we are going to do what I want for 6 months. If it does not work, I'll come back and kiss your ring. " Two years later my perferred treatment finally quit being effective! At a time when most children with my son's disease were not living to be 5 years old, my son lived to be 17! I wish I had known all I know now--I believe that his life would have been better and possibly longer. Peace Liz G.
Guest guest
I'm very sorry to hear about your son, Liz. Good for you for sticking up for him against the doctors. You did what you knew to be the best, and it sounds like it paid off very well, giving you more time with your dear son. If you don't mind my asking, what was his illness? We knew when we adopted Robbie that he had AIDS, Cerebal Palsy, Mental Retardation, and ADHD. He was nearly 3 years old at the time of his placement with us.We were told that babies born with AIDS (he was never " just HIV+, he was born a very sick baby) did not live to be 5 years old. This was in 1989. He died in his sleep in 2003 at the age of 17! He was such a teacher and guide in this world. Robbie is still teaching me and instructing me 6 years later. Thanks for asking and letting me share him. Peace Liz G.
