Ear Piercing

Ashton had her ears pierced before we knew she had CVID. It took a long time

for her ears to heal. I put antibiotic ointment on them constantly. They

finally did heal. We are careful to keep them clean.

Also, keep in mind that some people are allergic to nickel. We tested this

before we had her ears pierced. We put a piece of nickel under medical tape

and left it on the inside of her arm for a few days. My mother is allergic to

nickel, so we wanted to be careful. A rash, or worse, will happen if you are

allergic. My moms ears never healed.

Hope it goes well.

Discard last message if it came through...Yesterday, I took my daughter to the

ped for her 6 month WBV and was asked if we were going to get shots. I politely

declined and she left me alone. Later in the visit I proceeded to ask about the

appropriate age to pierce my daughter's ears. The ped gave me a blank stare and

mentioned that if I was going to pierce her ears, then she should get a tetanus

shot. I think that's kinda bogus. Any thoughts???

that;s funny. i had the same scenario with our first ped when we were still

doing wellbaby visits. when i asked about piercing he used that as a way of

blackmailing me into getting shots and said we can do it today if you are ready

for some shots.... yeah... as if!

needlesstosay, mikaelah's ears are still unpierced and i am fine with that. i

figured piercings are more for the beholder (i.e., mommy) than the baby... and

it will be exciting and fun for her when she gets older to get it done IF she

chooses to. :-)

Here's one: seeing as the equipment is sterilized and likely has not had any

livestock pooping on it recently, is getting your ears pierced really more

dangerous than getting vaccinated with possibly contaminated vaccines?

Just the way my mind works...

I'm 29 and have never had my ears pierced, but there are lots of pretty clip on

earrings, magnetic earrings and stick-ons that your daughter can wear when she

gets bigger and wants to wear them--IMO, the fewer needles entering your body

for any reason the less chance you have of getting sick, even if they're

supposedly sterile.

I've seen too many little babies and toddlers scream and cry in fear at those

mall piercing shots to ever do it to my own baby... if they want to have it done

when they're big enough to take care of it themselves, that's fine by me, but

until then there are lots of other ways to dress them up and put sparkly things

on them that don't involve piercing.

Oh, and the shot they insist on in the hospital is Hep B... so utterly

ridiculous to give it to a baby who is years away from engaging in any of the

behaviors that transmit it!!
