Amy:

If this is the new conjugated Meningococcal vaccine, then did have it.

Her ped wanted her to have it as soon as it was available, then check titers.

She didn't make any protective antibodies at all. But it's worth a " shot " ! No

reactions or anything like that, seems like a safe vaccine.

After she didn't make abs, I did some research and read that up to 15% of

school-age children are harmlessly colonized (nose and throat) with

meningococcal

bacteria at any given time... that made me nervous, knowing can't fight

it. I think it's more a concern from age 12 to 24, but I sure wish the

vaccine would have worked for us.

I hope it becomes part of routine immunizations, I love " herd immunity " since

doesn't make her own immunity to a few things!

(mom to , age 6-1/2, dairy intolerant-related GERD -- currently

has polysaccharide antibody def, previously had transient IgG, IgA, t-cell &

other defs... and also to Kate, age 3!, more dairy intolerant but very healthy!)

The triplets got Menactra a couple of months ago, Conner ended up back in

oncology again because of it, he developed lymphadenopathy the day after it

was administered. Hayden also had some lymph node enlargement from it, just

not as significant. The nodes eventually went away for Hayden and Conner's

are pretty small now, but they thought he had lymphoma because of it - I

think it was just a reaction to the stupid vaccine! We ended up putting him

through a CT scan and a PET scan partly because of it.

By the way, it's my understanding that Menactra isn't recommended for

children under the age of 11. I'd check into it before he gets it. It's

marketed as an " adolescent " vaccine.

Take care,

Mom to Conner (11, Asperger's, mild CP, partial seizures, asthma, GERD,

Hashimoto's disease, hypogammaglobulinemia, complement deficiency, antibody

deficiency, NK cell defect, and resolved adrenal insufficiency),

Hayden (11, PDD-NOS, IBS and moderate hearing loss/aided),

Evan (11, asthma and mild hearing loss/unaided),

and Kelsey - (9 going on 19!)

Honestly we stick to DVDs or movie files, we don't even watch live TV ever. I

don't think DD's seen more than a few commercials in her life. She doesn't know

anything about drugs or Mc's and I'm glad!! At this point I wouldn't even

want her watching toy or baby product commercials because we don't buy any of

that either! (Let's see...baby food, formula, baby wipes, disposable diapers,

poisonous baby washes...nope, we don't buy it.)

It is very sad though...I've thought for 10 years how horrible it was that they

could advertise prescription drugs on TV....

Nickelodeon. PBS is no better, they have so many Mcs commercials and if

you listen closely, they stress positive words like " happy " and " fun " and

" creative. " Now every time we drive by a Mcs my 26 month old points and

smiles and says " happy, happy, " and I have to tell him, no happy, it's sad...and

he has never even been inside a Mcs. Ugh, I let him watch TV in the

morning while I get ready or else he will tear up the house with nothing

grabbing his attention, but I think he is getting brainwashed. So scary!

My kids now make fun of prescription drug commercials. So, it's not all bad.

They're going to see advertising during their lives. Take the opportunity to

mock the ads and point out to your kids the tricks they pull. They're listening.

How about popping in a DVD of your choosing without the TV commercials?

WINNIE: great point! leading your kids to 'outsmart' the morons that put out

those commercials is a fundamental step in teaching them how they can think

for themselves. let them run with it!

We do that with all commercials and ads, it was cigarettes yesterday.

I don't agree with advertising prescription drugs to the general public. I can

see how it has boosted their sales, but I do feel that it is unethical. IMO, it

would be great if they didn't try to " sell " to doctors either, but just offer

the doctors their data without any freebies.
