With Mandated Healthcare, Your Healthcare Freedom of Choice is at Risk

According to an opinion piece in The Wall Street Journal, “The Obama

administration . . . is convinced it is smart enough to engineer more efficient

medical practices out of D.C.†A key issue of healthcare reform must be the

freedom to choose. But if the goal is to control healthcare costs to make health

insurance affordable for all Americans, does mandated, government-run health

insurance achieve that result?

Who Gets to Make Your Lifestyle Choices—You or the CDC?

Dr. Frieden is the new director of the Centers for Disease Control and

Prevention. The New York Post called him “Dr. Buttinsky†because of his

policy to ban smoking and trans fats in New York City. Does he want the CDC to

become the Lifestyle Police? Is our nation’s healthcare crisis served by

trampling the rights of those who want to make own healthcare decisions?

Update on the NIH Chelation Trial

One of the largest alternative medicine experiments ever launched—an

investigation into the efficacy of chelation therapy for heart patients—is

once again enrolling heart attack survivors. The study voluntarily suspended

enrollment last fall after allegations about the safety of the trial and

possible conflicts of interest by some of the investigators. The $30 million

study is co-sponsored by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute and the

National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine.

Alternative Medicine Find Wider Acceptance by Doctors, Insurers, and Hospitals,

Yet They “Lack Value�

The Associated Press says that “Alternative medicine has become mainstream.

Consumer spending on it in some cases rivals that of traditional healthcare.â€

Yet they claim that supplements and CAM therapies “lack value,†are

unregulated, with people using them “in blind faith.†Yet nothing could be

farther from the truth.

AAHF is a supporter of the Certification Board for Nutrition Specialists (CBNS)

of the American College of Nutrition which administers an examination for

professionals with an advanced degree seeking certification as Certified

Nutrition Specialists (CNS).  The CNS designation is applicable in a variety of

professional settings, including but not limited to:  hospital or clinic-based

nutrition support, laboratory or field research, individual and group

counseling, classroom teaching, commercial development of new nutritional

products, authorship and public policy development.
