My blood type is ab-. When I was pregnant with both of my children I had to get

a shot so the anti bodies didn't build up and kill my unborn child(at least

thats how the doctor put it). Is this safe? I was affraid at the time but now I

starting to question it.

That would be the Rhogam shot - and it used to contain Mercury (thimerasol)

depends on when you got the shot.

I had it with my son 10 years ago, and with my daughter 5 years ago I declined

it.

Questions are the way to go.

The problem is when the answers don't make sense, many folks won't come back

with the harder questions.

When your doctor gets pissed because of your question you know your on the right

track.

I got mine 5 years ago. I was told once you get it, you don't have to have

another one in subsequent pregnancies. Is that not true? I really don't want

another one.

You're supposed to get Rhogam every pregnancy if you're NEG blood group and your

partner is POS. (or the other way around I guess)

I didn't look into it much as my last pregnancy was my last, and I figured I

wouldn't need to worry about any other pregnancies going wrong.

I did have the option of getting the baby's blood tested right after birth, if

the baby is the same blood group as you - no worries, if not then that would be

when a person would need the Rhogam.

You can also be tested to see if you have developed the antibodies.

My last baby was 0+ and I am 0-. I did not get tested, did not get the shot as

its was no concern at that time.

You need to first start off by looking at why the shot is given, then look to

the ingredients of the shot. Have your blood tested, etc.... nobody else can

tell you what to do (your doctor included) Weigh up the risks etc..

I was talked into the Rhogam the first time, the second time had a different

doctor and he said, " you don't need it after the first one " so who knows!?

It's b/c supposedly those of us with Rh- blood types (I'm A-) who have babies

with Rh+ blood types (none of mine b/c my husband is also Rh-) will have an

immune response producing antibodies which would attack subsequent pregnancies

in which the baby has Rh+ blood type. I got lucky that my husband is also Rh-,

but I STILL had to remind nurses, etc after and at the beginning of all of my

pregnancies that I didn't need the shot b/c I would definitely have a baby with

Rh-. You only " need " the shot during pregnancy if there's a risk of blood

swapping, which is very rare and usually only occurs from injury, etc. So, many

who've looked into it only get one after a pregnancy (and it has to be soon

after - like 72 hours or less, I can't remember exactly) with a baby with Rh+.

If the baby has a negative blood type, no shot is needed.

Well I am A- and husband is O+ so and was having problems with the first 6

months of the pregnancy with bleeding. Second one no problems and no Rhogam

shot. Depends on what's going on and the dr I guess..

I wound up having the shot in my fridge and after the midwives tested my son's

blood after birth, I wound up getting the shot (he was + and I'm -). I'll be

doing the same thing this time around - I'm hoping for another successful

homebirth.
