MMR vaccination scheme bullies parents

By Tony Parsons 6/06/2009

The latest scheme to bully parents into giving

their children the MMR vaccination is to bar kids

from school unless they have had the measles, mumps and rubella jab.

How grotesque is that?

Parents who decline the MMR jab are not thoughtless, stupid or uncaring.

They are unconvinced.

Privately, some doctors admit that the MMR jab

can probably do harm to children with

pre-existing conditions, although on balance

these doctors – or at least the ones I have

spoken to – still recommended the jab.

Our daughter had her MMR jab but only after a lot

of soul-searching. In the end it wasn’t bullying

that made my wife and I decide to go ahead with the jab.

It was a doctor, happy to discuss our fears, who

persuaded us that our daughter needed to be

immunised, whatever the unknown risk.

But I remain totally sympathetic to any mother or

father who believes that for some children there

could be a link between the MMR jab and autism.

Let’s hear the voices of these parents. Because

if the medical profession succeeds in bullying

parents into getting the MMR jab, then they will at last have won the battle.

But they will have certainly lost the argument.
