Guest guest
Mumps involves swelling of the parotid glands specifically. They are located at the back of the cheek between the ear and the jaw. I don't believe mumps affects any of the other salivary glands - there are three major pairs in total of which the parotids are the largest. The other two major pairs are the sublinguals (under the tongue) and the submandibulars which are very deep in the floor of the mouth (under the jaw). There are also many smaller salivary glands in the mouth. I don't think from what you have described that this is mumps. But I would have thought that serological testing would have revealed mumps if it had been present. I don't believe it would take two weeks, but that's my opinion. What other symptoms does he have/has he had recently? Sue x -- Help with MUMPS Folks. My son is currently in hospital, he's been there since Monday - I'm confused and angry with the doctors, with different stories about whats going on. When he went in to the ER he had an infected Salivary gland, he was tested and they said its strep. He was put on Antibiotics through his IV. Next the floor of his mouth started to swell up - he had blister things under his tongue. One doc said the Mumps test came back Negative, he said its still the Strep virus. Other doc said the strep has cleared up with the anitbiotics, he said the test for Mumps takes 2 weeks to come back. I need to know if the test takes that long, how do I know if this is mumps or not - I do NOT want them to keep my son in hospital for this... I'm angry and afraid and need someone to please help me here. My son is 9 years old, never had a shot, never had a disease. Guest guest
Thanks Sue, The first sign was pain in his cheek, he's 9 years old and it seemed to me he couldn't pin point the pain area, after a few days he said it was coming from the back of his mouth, at the last molar tooth. Then the swelling up on his cheek came. It moved down under his jaw and into the salivary gland. Testing at the hospital showed Strep in the salivary gland, the antibiotics took care of that, and that gland was fine after about 3 days. The swelling under his tongue started around that time, when he lifts his tongue up it looks like he has another tongue under it, its huge and swollen that he can't talk properly and has lots of spit. (drooling) the swelling under the tongue produced blister like things after a couple of days, they were white and looked to be full of puss or something. those puss/blisters have since disapeared, but the swelling remains. His teacher told me he was complaining his ear was hurting the day before all this started. he never said anything about that to me. He had a huge fever, they were dosing him up on tylenol at the hospital and they wouldn't let it go over 101.6 until I asked them to please stop. we then let his fever go up to 104.3 and then he got tylenol. That was at the peak, and thats when the salivary gland got well. Since then his fever hasn't gone over 101 at all, he is maintaining a normal temp now wiht some slight fever ever now and then but hardly noticable. A week or two before all this, I noticed a red circle on his back - it looked to me like Ring worm and I treated it by putting tea-tree oil on it twice and it went away. He told me it was itchy. Guest guest
I told the doc about the red circle - he agreed that it sounded like ringworm, and the circle has disapeared. I tried to upload a picture of his face, the day we took him to the dentist (thinking he had an abcess) I have uploaded it here: http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z162/Mikcher/SANY1090.jpg The swelling got a lot worse after this pic, and then under his chin started to swell up with the floor of his mouth swelling. Guest guest
How strange. Poor lad - it must be extremely uncomfortable for him to say the least. I would have to wonder if that red circle on his back has anything to do with it. If, for example, it was some sort of bite - maybe a tick bite, as Winnie suggested - and you then put tea tree oil on it - which would have suppressed it, then the reaction could have been coming out through lymph nodes - of which there are many around the neck/head area. Or if the bite had been infected, same thing. Just speculation, but I don't really believe in coincidence. I do know it isn't good to suppress any form of skin eruption and drive it back into the body. There's usually some form of payback. Even if it was ringworm, it's not good to suppress it and certainly not with tea tree oil which can be extremely irritant to the skin due to its high 1,8 cineole content. How is he in himself - his disposition? Is he eating/drinking okay, any vomiting/diarrhoea, any other symptoms? Sounds like he needs another good fever to clear it all out. What are the hospital proposing? What is their plan of action? Guest guest
The hospital is just in a wait and see mode, which is annoying to me, seems like they don't really know whats going on and are just hoping the antibiotics DO something. I'm unsure how to treat ringworm other than to get rid of it with tea-tree oil, it was only a little itchy before I put the oil on, then it was fine and started to clear up in a day or so. I don't think it was a bite, but heck it could have been, I don't think tick, we would have seen the tick I'm sure, and its not the season for them right nw - we still have snow on the ground. His disposition is close to normal, he has been happy go lucky for the most part, but his sleep has been very disturbed, he has been crying and wimpering in his sleep the last 3 or 4 nights, and a little mumbling going on - I did catch a few words the other night he said he needed a vacation! He seemed a little frustrated and bored today and yesterday, its difficult to keep an active kid in bed for so long, and when I ask if he wants to go walk down the hall or something, he doesn't feel like it. He hasn't been eating - drinking when we keep pestering him to do so. He started to eat the other day, but tiny little tips of a teaspoon kinda thing, not enough at all. No vomitting, he's having bowel movements but they're small hard and a few times a day. He had one night of sweating, I found him with wet sheets and pillow... that was two nights ago, when the wimpering and crying in his sleep started. He did get a red rash after 24 hours of antibiotic, on his warmer body parts, under his arms, down to the elbow, sides, groin etc. they said it was a reaction to the antibiotic, then they said it was the strep. Guest guest
It depends on what type of antibiotic they have him one. Some can only be by IV or by a shot BUT>>>> He can go home with home health for antibiotics. We took my son out of the NICU when he was 5 days old and he had an IV for another 5 days at home. IF that is all that is keeping him there (as in my son's case) tell them you want to go home with home health to finish the antibiotics. Unless there is another reason they are keeping him such as he is unstaable in some way. andrea > > > By IV.
