Antibiotics??

I am a newbie here and have really enjoyed what I have been reading.

I think I am going to learn a lot. Thanks! My almost 1 year old has

not been vaxed and has been healthy. Although, over the weekend he

came down with a cold. I took him into the doctors today and he has

double ear infection. How do you all feel about antibiotics? I know

it weakens the immune system if over used. Now, that I have the

bottle here I am questioning whether or not to give him his second

dose. Any thoughts?

I don’t do ABX. I avoid them at all costs but I have given in sometimes if

the benefit or perceived benefits are better than the ABX. I did do a round

for myself last year at this time b/c I was fighting several things at once:

mastitis and a new born and coombs positive bilirubin problems and the

threat of having to do more NICU if things didn’t resolve.

For the kids: I did do abx for an ear infection for , 2x.. once when

she was a baby. Took a month. Don’t think that abx helped it clear up and

wish I had just said no but I was young and naïve and didn’t know anything

at all about anything alternative except: you’re sick. Go to the doctor.

She had them again several years ago.

I would wait 10 days to see if it clears up on its own. A ped once told a

friend of mine: you do abx and it takes 10 days, you don’t do abx and takes

10 days.

Abx for ear infections are way too common and it drives me insane. If it’s

bacterial they might help, if it’s viral, they won’t. they can’t tell the

difference for which one to say it is so “just to be safe” they prescribe.

Drives me crazy.

I believe that most ear infections clear up in about the same amount

of time with or without antibiotics. He could use some Hyland's

earache homeopathic medicine or a mild (preferably homeopathic) pain

reliever in the meantime. There are plenty of other natural things

you can do to help him, I'm sure others will jump in with suggestions.

Thanks!  I do have the children's Hylands starter pack.  And, I use that for

coughs, fevers, and teething issues.  I just wanted Joby to have a good night

sleep and to feel better soon.  I think I gave in too early.  It's been 4 days.

So, an ear infection can clear up on it's own?

Don't suppose you're still breastfeeding, are you? Breastmilk is marvellous

for ear infections.

Garlic oil too, and diluted eucalyptus oil. Plenty of natural remedies

before you turn to antibiotics. If he eats dairy, reduce or eliminate it

for the time being - it stimulates mucuc production and aggravates ear

problems.

Did the doctor take samples from his ears for analysis of bacteria, or did

he just say " ear infection " after a quick look? Ear infection is a different

thing to ear inflammation, which might be all he saw.

Sheri has wonderful articles on ear problems - I'll see what I can find and

send on. And yes, ear infections clear up very nicely on their own. Does

he have a fever with it? Any other symptoms?
