Guest guest Posted October 1, 2008 Report Share Posted October 1, 2008 That is true...for instance in the cases of sharing the minimal information for insurance purposes, to another doctor that you may be seeking care from. All offices and hospitals will give you their rules and how they may use it and YOU sign and consent to it, or not. Without it signed info cannot be sent to insurance company for billing for instance or to another doc for care...and then it's the bare minimum needed for care or billing. If you want your records sent somewhere, you specify what you want and what you don't want sent...if what you don't want is sent the office or hospital can be in major trouble. I used to work in medical records for a hospital and in doctors offices...I know all about HIPAA. Believe me. It's a royal pain, but in a different way. the hospital I used to work at was extremely strict...we couldn't even tell people the name of the doctor that saw them in the ER over the phone without a written consent form from them.
