You may have syphilis or an excess of oily build up. Get a full STD test panel done. If it is oil build up, use high concentration coal tar shampoo. Also, try not to wear hats.

PIs tend to dry the skin, some more then others,

try to use a mild soap and don't wash your hair every day with soap,

on off days just rinse your hair with conditioner.

Also ask your dermatologist about it just in case you might have a fungal

infection, but most likely is just dry skin from the medications.

I also take Truvada and Kaletra, and have experienced within the past 6 months

or so, very small scabs on the top of my scalp. I found them because my scalp is

so itchy and when scratching I scratched one off. VERY small (smaller than a

single red pepper flake for example), no bleeding. They are not bothersome nor

painful. Just wondering what they are. I haven't had any in a while, but I've

never had more than four occur across that period of 6 months. Nothing I've

worried about, only curious about.

I don't have an oily problem, and I seriously doubt that syphilis is the culprit

in my case. Although I respect the opinion, I think pointing to syphilis as a

culprit might be overstating it and needlessly scaring a lot of people.

With that said, I will also say this. While we are ALL seeing our doctor's

regularly, I would hope that most would be like me that when getting regular

bloodwork every 3 months that an STD screening is included, no matter how low

the risk factor you believe an STD to be in your case...being in a monogamous

relationship or otherwise.

I can, with certainty, state I have no STDs.

It just seems more than odd that all who've posted about this problem are on at

least one common drug....Truvada. What are the chances everyone has syphilis?

Do you put any hair color/dyes in your hair? I can't put them in my hair because it causes me to have scabs on my scalp. Now I only use henna without any problem.

I doubt that small scabs on your scalp are related to your HIV meds. Have you had a dermatologist look at your scabs? They might be actinic keratosis, a pre-cancerous skin condition caused by exposure to the sun, which I have. It's a very common condition in lighter skinned persons, especially if among us follicly impaired. They can be treated by freezing with liquid nitrogen, or you can use Aldara or other agent that causes the outer layers of your scalp to slough off faster than usual, taking the scabs with them. There are other possibilities as well, but you should have a dermatologist examine you to identify what your have."I take Truvada and Kaleetra ,have been for 2 years. I am now getting

hard to guess what u have without more info...do u scratch your scalp at all?

u may have seborrheic dermatitis, which is the common cause of dandruff but

tends to get much stronger in HIV+ people...it's usually caused by the Candida

yeast.

for me, coal tar, selenium sulfide and zinc formulations NEVER worked very well

at all...what i have found to work well is ketoconazole, which is in Nizoral

shampoo. non-prescription strength is 1% (available everywhere) n Rx strength is

2%. both are expensive compared to other shampoos, but they WORK...they also

lather very well, so u use less.

i wet my hair n then squeeze out most of the water, then i mix a bit of the 1%

Nizoral with a bit of either body wash (cheaper) or shampoo that contains 2%

salicylic acid (which doesn't work as well at killing the yeast but DOES add to

the yeast killing effect, and also helps exfoliate flakes/scabs already there) n

wash my scalp and face with the mix. sometimes i add just a touch of 10%

benzoyl-peroxide based face-wash.

before i found this mix on my own, i was using topical corticosteroids,

ketoconazole cream n topical antibiotics on my face n scalp to address a combo

of severe dermatitis, acne and rosacea (an awful combo)...now i rarely use any

of them (2-3 times a month), which extends their usefulness because u can build

a tolerance to those drugs.

between my current shampoo combo and my taking minocycline 50mg 2/day (to guard

against hiv-related brain damage), my skin is generally very clear for the last

3 years...a MASSIVE change from most of my adult life.

if u ultimately go for corticosteroids, start with the very weakest (eg

Desonide, Fluocinolone, etc) n use as sparingly as possible.

good luck to u!

I've had problems with my scalp for last 5 years (little bumbs and scabs). When I finally went to the dermatologist, he said it was basically acne and gave me antibiotic cream. That seemed to help, but never got rid of it. I now manage it (but it still persists at a lesser degree) by routinely using TPlus Salicyclic Acid shampoo (walgreen's) and Acne Free Terminator 10 (hey, I get to feel like a teenager when I buy it). I've been on cocktail since '97, but I assumed it was more likely due to testosterone shots. Never occurred to me it might be the meds???

Hi All

Both my husband and I have the same problem.

He currently has scabs all over his scalp it is very itchy so he scratches and

they bleed especially at night( he wears cotton gloves to try to prevent this),

and he can scratch in his sleep until it is very sore and bleeds, my hair tend

to stop my scratching causing such damage.

He is bald so it looks very unsightly but of course being female I am not bald

and I am told I have psoriasis - but I do not think it is this as it is exactly

the same problem as him which basically amounts to the same result i.e bumps and

scabs all over our heads and extreme itchiness, but they do not show as much due

to my having hair.

We have both tried Nizoral shampoo and been given other shampoos by the

consultant. We don't have seborrheic dermatitis or acne as we have been screened

for that or any other bacterial complaint according to our consultant.

We were told it was due to the skin being the biggest organ of the body and

biggest barrier to infection and one that is often directly affected by having

HIV,i.e dryness, allergic/auto immune skin complaints etc ( and that it is not

due to the meds) - that was what our consultant said, but it is not much help as

we are still both scratching all night!

We both have betnovate/anti bacterial preparations which helps a little but not

enough.

We are both on Atripla

But it is getting very hard to cope with for both of us so any further

answers/remedies we have not already tried would be very welcome

Thank You

Often, there are fungal infections that are responsible, and as someone mentioned previously, Nizoril containing products may be a huge help.I'm not familiar with medications causing this kind of problem.JB

What can be related to the meds is heightened photosensitivity, which

accelerates the actinic changes.

We all should be using sunscreen with at least spf 70 protection, and of course

vitamin analysis / supplementation because of the sunlight you won't be getting.

I have been dealing with this for about 8 months now and feels like they are

nesting only on my scalp. I have many sores on my head and am embarrased to get

a haircut. My kids have been itching their heads lately and am hoping they

don't start getting sores either. Any suggestions? I've never posted before.

I think for children one of the things you have to do is to enforce a healthier diet (harder with teenagers). No more candy for young children. Bugs are attracted to internal molds/yeasts that are fed by sugars and carbohydrates in the body. The more outdoors the children can play in the sunshine, the better too because of the far infrared rays from the sun which strengtens immunity. Some of these nasty things carry harmful bacterias and if the body is stronger some people can fight it off. There may be a genetic component as well.

My grandchildren and daughter/son-in-law were here on two separate occasions for 3 weeks each visit and one granddaughter got bites, but it did not remain with her when she returned home. The rest of the family got nothing at all. My husband gets fewer bites than I do, but he does get them on occasion--he works part of the day outside in the sun. I have it the worst and my immune system is least functional out of all. If you can get them to take a bath use epson salts (about 2 cups per bath) and borax (maybe 1 cup) in their baths. Dry them off with a hair dryer, not a towel. They may be a little crusty, but the combination seems to kill ones that are present on the skin level. If the skin gets really dry use something like Aquaphor to hydrate the skin again. Hopefully their bugs have not gone internal as yet if early on.

Here is a suggestion no one takes, but it has helped me enormously. Get a steam press. I don't have to treat the clothing as aggressively with lots of product when I press clothing. You can use a hot steam iron, but too time consuming. I press towels even (thin ones). This cooks the heck out of all fabric, so no need for Borax or anything else except detergent in the wash. In the long run it saves money although you have to put out for initial expense. The pressing is pretty fast. I usually spend about 1/2 hr a day doing this. No mites, collembola or mold can live in steam pressed clothing. So that is one area you can control. Areas of the house used less often, close off after treating everything with spray or fogging. Then there are fewer areas of the house to clean up. A friend with birdmites got rid of her mites by using kitchen, bathroom and bedroom only! She didn't even have to treat her rugs. Treat your attic and make sure all holes of entry are sealed from places where mice can come through. Fumigate the area first before you go into the attic. Use Diatomaceous earth in holes and crevices, attic. Healinghope suggested drilling holes in walls and putting DE in all voids. She has had some of the best suggestions and so have many others here including Lynn, Bill, many others.

So immune system is important. This helps gradually to improve things, but you have to stick with it. It is not a simple fix. There is no simple fix to this problem.

I did spray and continue on occasion to use a tank (from Home Depot) like they use for gardening for spraying pesticides... (largest capacity) spray the entire house with ammonia 1 part to 4 parts water. Try not to breath it and have pets and kids out of the house until ammonia dissipates. Spray walls and ceiling. Let dry. Eliminate as much fabric as you can in the house. Toss pillows and anything they can hide in. May have to get rid of rugs and carpeting. We did. We took many things to the dump. Do not give anything away to friends or thrift stores.

Marie has great protocols too and maybe she will contribute here.

I did order a fogger and Cedarcide which is non-toxic and can't wait to try it, but haven't done so as yet. There is debate on how effective it is in killing mites according to many, but some had good results from it. It seems to be a mixed bag. It does kill some insects. I'm still hoping it kills mites, but also various molds which is a huge part of my problem. Mold testing kits can be purchased from Home Depot or maybe Lowes. Send it away for samples of molds existing in the home. Keep humidity down to a minimum and always use fans in bathrooms for at least 1/2 hour after a shower or bath. Molds and mites and collembola feast off of molds.

Take suggestions from people on this forum that know more than me. There are other sites as well, but this is a good one.

Blessings...

Liquid lye soap for body and scalp. Also s sulfur shampoo if you want. Take

a bar of lye soap and cut 1/4 bar very small slivers or shave use blender or

mixer warm water blend, makes a gallon shake well before use. Put in dish soap

container ect for use. I use vinegar jugs t keep in. You can also add flower of

sulfur to this blend with olive oil then blend into liquid lye. Also taking

flower of sulfur and MSM internally may help.

Uses for Lye Soap!

Over the years it has been real interesting to learn really just how many use

there are for lye soap. Our customers have shared many a story (many I wish we

would have written down to remember them all) which is one reason we started our

Guest Book here on the website so folks can share their story for all us to

share and remember. However the main use of course is bathing. It is the only

soap our family uses for bathing and shampooing. I will have to say of all the

soaps we offer the Oatmeal is our favorite. Lye soap works really well when

doing dishes also. It is an excellent grease cutter. In fact you can't beat it

to clean those hands after working on the car or the lawn mower. It cuts the

grease off your hands much better than most commercial products.

SKIN CONDITIONS

Folks tell us Lye Soap works wonderfully on several kinds of skin problems. Dry

scalp or dandruff (see our Guest Book), acne, eczema, psoriasis, skin allergies,

insect bites, and burns to name a few. Of course the key to having any luck with

skin problems is using the soap on a regular basis. Some conditions may require

several applications throughout the day to help the healing process go quicker.

A Lye Soap lotion works best for throughout the day application. ( I will tell

you in a bit how to make a lotion you can carry with you.)

POISON IVY

This is probably the most renown use for Lye Soap most will tell you they use it

for. In fact this is about the only thing some people buy it for. I have had

several customer tell me they just need a couple bars to keep on the shelf for

when the kids get in the poison ivy. This is when I suggest they read this part

of the website because as you can tell the soap is good for a lot more than just

this. However a couple of hints on using the soap for poison ivy. If you know

your going to be heading out and getting into an area that has poison ivy in it,

Take some of your Lye Soap lotion and rub it on any exposed areas of your skin

that may come into contact with the plant. What this does is puts a barrier

between you and the oil that comes off the plant. And to further prevent any

chance of getting the wonderful after effects of being in the ivy patch be sure

an take a good hot shower with the soap when you get back in. The hot water will

open the pores of the skin to help flush off any oil that may have settled on

you. Be sure after lathering up really good that when rinsing you rinse from the

top of your body down more or less rinsing everything away from you so there

won't be any residual poison ivy oil left behind on you.

PLEASE NOTE: any of the uses we tell of on this website are general information

of either our own experiences or of those others have shared with us and is not

meant to be any type of official medical advice in any way. We are not doctors

and always recommend if in doubt you seek professional medical or other

professional advice before hand.

LAUNDRY

If you want really nice clean smelling laundry and want to keep the colors

bright and your whites white you cannot beat our original soap. We just scrape a

few flakes off the edge of the bar and add it straight to the washing machine

when doing wash. Not only does it keep the clothes bright and good smelling but

it removes several types of stains such as grease, it is great for that ring

around the collar and the sweat stains in the hat band. On some of the more

stubborn stains you may need to take a bit of your Lye Soap lotion and rub in a

bit before throwing it in the washing machine.

LYE SOAP LOTION - HOW TO MAKE IT ( same process to make shampoo, dish soap and

plant spray as well )

To make a lotion out of the soap it is really very easy. In fact it is a good

way to recycle those small pieces left over from the shower. To make the lotion

just take several small pieces and mix them with water. We recommend you use

either a spring water or a distilled water. Something that has the impurities

removed. Especially if your using the lotion for a skin allergy or something of

the like. They put so many things in city water any more you don't know what you

may be mixing into your lotion thus maybe even irritating your condition

further. Also you may need to add a little heat when trying to get the soap and

water mix if the pieces are really hard. Not much heat just a bit. Anyway just

mix in enough water and stir it until you get the consistency you want for your

lotion or dish soap or shampoo, whatever it is your making the mix for. Now be

sure to put your mix into something relatively air tight so it won't dry right

back out. If you need to take it with you in your purse or something just get a

small squeeze bottle or a zip lock bag that your sure won't leak. We have also

been told if you thin down the solution enough you can use it as a plant spray

to keep unwanted bugs away from your plants.

WHAT MAKES LYE SOAP SO SPECIAL?

Actually what makes our soap special is because what it is - it is All Natural.

It is simply water, lard and lye. All natural products. We do not add any

hardeners, fragrances, perfumes or dyes, etc. The soaps we do offer that you can

smell comes from all natural oils to create that wonderful memory of Grandma's

place. In fact the main special ingredient in our soap comes from the natural

process called soponification. The process that takes place when the soap is

cooked properly creates a wonderful glycerin content that nearly all commercial

soap makers separate out and sell off to cosmetic companies and such. We don't

do that - we leave it right in the soap like it was meant to be. We believe the

glycerin to be the natural healing ingredient that makes lye soap so special and

also helps keep the wrinkles away. Most people guess me to be about 15 years

younger than I really am.

crawlers and biters once in a while.  So you have to treat the whole body.

You have to treat the environment as well as the outer body and the inner as

well.  When I saw the inner, change your diet (for many of us this is

necessary, but not all), no sugars except occasional fruit, lots of green

vegetables, cleanse colon, eat fewer carbohydrates in general), etc.  You've

probably heard all of this before.  With children it is harder to all of the

above, I know.

Can't remember where I read it, but if it's collembola, they love bleach. For whatever reason, It works for them. Check the hair for black hairs. Pull the hairs out if you find them and look at the root. Does it have what looks like a flat black fungus? at the bottom. At least rule out a bacteria or fungus that has set up house. I had found this on my scalp and feel it is related to the attraction.

>> I have been looking at this web site for months. I've tried the tea tree oil and shampoo but that just seems to aggrivate it along with cleaning, many baths using salt and bleach. > > I believe we have gotten this from mice in the attic. Last year was the worse as we heard them through the ceiling. > > Another concern is that when we go on vacation, they are still there biting us. It's so sickening that you

can't get away from it not even for a little while. I used to feel that we need to move out of our house but now realize they are living in our skin. My kids are a main concern with school. I'm afraid to have any of their friends over, what happens if I have a birthday party for them? I am so afraid of anyone getting bit. > > > >> > > > > > Are you going to any other sites for information and have you read anything, or is this your first contact? > > > > > > > > I did find that because of how tenacious these things are they migrate from one place to another if their locale is not working for them. They started in my scalp

M,

By internal I mean, into the bowel, into the rectum, under the skin laying eggs, into organs, anything like that. They can and do in the nose, eyes, ears, just about anywhere, especially if it is warm and protected. I think at the very beginning they are not internal in the body, but later may become internal. I don't know of anyone presently who had mites that did not have them eventually become internal in the body.

I had shaved my hair and was using a soft loofa and Pepto Bismol to get them off my scalp. That worked, but Lynn, , and Marie feel the aluminum oxide may be dangerous. I have now moved to coconut oil. I did something very stupid while waiting for my coconut oil to come in but I think it might have helped. I bought what I thought was baby lotion with shea and coconut butter in it. I don't notice detail. It went on really thick, but the critters would emerge into it and I could roll them off. My skin created the "Elephant rash" behind the left knee, on the right arm and on the right side, on the top of the shoulders and back, and on the neck going up to the chin. These areas, which I think is biofilm, peeled with the dead critters in it. It wasn't until I ran out that I bothered fully read the label

and see it was baby wash! I've since bought Suave lotion with shea and coconut, and I the critters will emerge. I wiped them off with paper towel. I took my 1st soak in 2 table spoons of coconut oil last night. I hope it works for my like it did Bill. I'll keep you posted.

Please do keep us posted. I think the more you can purge, the better in the long run. That's just my little pet theory. Who knows what is true. :) That is a minor little oh-oh . My sister was putting drops in her eyes and accidentally reached for a small glue bottle and put glue in her eyes. Off to the ER--she's fine but these things happen. She is in her mid-70's.

I was telling another teacher at lunch today that it is interesting how you can care and share with people you have never met before. How we are all cheering for Tony and provide an out let that is very needed. Every now and than, I pretend nothing is wrong and I watch the leaves move in the wind and think about how lovely life is. Then............back to the routine.
