My Sister in Law is 38 years old and her doctor is telling her that she HAS to have one. I would like some info to help educate her on the danagers... Nowadays, I bet they test for a lot more things to see if the baby is " viable " or not. They think they are God. I read years ago, that the genetic damage is the result of the cumulative effect of Xrays over a woman's lifetime. That wouldn't surprise me, as so much of allopathy is dangerous and destructive. If the tests are positive, then mothers are offered the opportunity to destroy their babies. Sometimes, as with any tests, they are wrong, and they destroy perfectly healthy babies. The tests themselves carry risk too! It disturbs me, as I think of Nazi Germany - my baby became brain injured AFTER birth, and only once did I ever hear anyone suggest that he should be euthanased! Yet it seems to be perfectly " normal " behavior before they are born. Guest guest Posted August 20, 2008 Report Share Posted August 20, 2008 I can ask on one of my natural mom's list. I'm over 38 and when I was younger they tried to tell me I needed one. I think they try and make mother's over 30 or 35 take one. I know that their is risk of miscarriage. I believe Amniocentisis is to check for thing like Downs syndrome and other problems. If you don't believe in abortion or getting rid of a baby that is abnormal than I think the test are not necessary. Also I've heard there are false possitives. Some mom's were told there was a problem with their baby and spent the rest of their pregnancy worried. I refuse them. I also go to midwives when I can and with my last baby it was more like having an unassisted birth. They showed up just in time and helped with clean up but basically treated my pregnancy and me like we were healthy and not in a diseased state. The older you get the more some Dr's treat you different and of course as a woman being pregnant we are treated like every case is putting us our our baby in danger. For the most part pregnancy is healthy and normal. They tell you that because they want to cover their butts (and someone is making a lot of money of off them). The danger is you could kill your child. I had them with my first three, getting progressively more uncertain that I was doing the right thing. With the third, as the needle went in I watched him kick on the screen and I had the sudden thought that this could be the last time he might move and it would be my fault. I refused to do it ever again. All my boys were normal. The amnio didn't make them that way. I have a doctor friend who told me about someone who was pregnant with twins, and miscarried both before the test results came back that they were normal. She also told me a story about someone who had a Down syndrome child even thought the test came back that she wouldn't. It's and uncertain " science. " Sometimes they will put the needle right through the placenta. Does that seem smart?? I wouldn't even do the screening blood test. My doc explained it didn't matter what the results were, that once my age was figured into it, the risks would be upped. Then I began to understand what the screening tests were all about--they mean nothing. They assess risks, they don't tell you what is actually there. By the way, 38 is NOT old. I was 37 when I had my first and 46 when I had my last. Guest guest Posted August 21, 2008 Report Share Posted August 21, 2008 Hmmmm... I was 33 when I had my first, 36 when I had my second, and 38 when I had my last baby (just this past November). I refused amnio all times. There is an increased risk of spontaneous abortion (miscarriage) from the procedure. I would not have had an abortion anyway, so having the test was a moot point. And there are many cases of fasle results, so why worry when you could be worrying for nothing? Older women are not more at risk for having a baby with Downs, by the way. Amnios are extremely invasive procedures, and carry significant risk. The miscarriage rate is 1 in 200. She could go into premature labor, have an infection, or harm the baby. I had a baby at that age, and I told my OB absolutely not. She tried to explain how my age put the baby at increased risk for deformation bla bla bla, and I told her I would the parent the child I was meant to parent. (Very good that I did as it turned out.) Aside from that, I knew 2 couples who were older, like myself, and pregnant at the same time. Both couples had opted for testing. Both got results suggesting there would be problems w/their babies. Worried themselves sick for nothing because as it turned out - their babies were fine! I always skip their tests as I would not abort even if they said there was a problem. You can always read up if suspect there's a problem-w/o the invasive test. Guest guest Posted August 21, 2008 Report Share Posted August 21, 2008 I was told yesterday that my doctor wants to take my baby two weeks early (this will make 6 c-sections) He isn't available to do it a week early, so he wants to do it two weeks early. He says that my uterus is very thin.... He wants to do an amnio to make sure that the baby's lungs are developed. I've already turned down one amnio with a specialist for another reason. Don't they have ways of testing baby's lung development without amnio?? I'm very against amnios. I am 28 weeks pregnant and will be 35 the end of this month. They wanted to take my third two weeks early--I was told there was a " window " on the scar they saw during the second C-section. I refused. My son was 12 days late and I had him vaginally. My next son was 9 days late, also vaginal birth. You have way more C-sections so it's different for you about choosing another one. But why can't they wait until you go into labor and take the baby then? I don't know about the lung testing. My sister in law isn't educated, refuses to look into anything unless I send something to her that packs a punch she will blindly follow whatever her doctor says because she and my brother who is a MD believe that MD's know all! *** Big EyeRoll *** What I am looking for is research and links to it preferably from MD's that anyone knows about that shows the False Positives and how the amnio itself can cause the baby to naturally abort. I am just trying to help the poor little one from a mother who doesn't know any better. Secondly, this test does have a risk of miscarriage. Third, if she is not getting an abortion, regardless of the results, it doesn't make sense to do it. In my first pregnancy, I had like 10 tests which included multiple ultrasounds and blood tests, etc, I had an emergency c-section after being induced for 12 hours at 34 weeks for low amniotic fluid. Second pregnancy, I had 4 tests, the initial blood test, the Gestational Diabetes test, the GBS test, and the 20 week ultrasound, and I had a VBAC at 38 weeks when my labor started, I didn't go to the hospital until 3 days later. In my next pregnancy, I'm not doing any, unless I want to, because again a pregnant woman doesn't have to do any tests, unless she wants to.
